This is routine work in the reading of water meter and recording the consumption. Work primarily involves reading various types of water meters and recording the readings in a handheld unit. Work may extend to the testing and minor repair of water meters and to the changing of meters. In addition, work may extend to reestablishing water service for delinquent accounts that have been brought current. Work is performed in accordance with established routines and procedures. No supervision is given, and on meter reading assignments only general supervision is received, primarily through a determination in the Utilities Office that readings are correct and through a lack of complaints with regard to high bills caused by reading errors. Work originates as a result of a recurring meter reading cycle. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following : / pulliReads water meters on an assigned route and records findings. / liliDetermines whether meters are functioning properly and reports any defects to a superior. / liliInspects visible plumbing for water leakage. / liliMay remove and replace existing defective water meters. / liliMay turn water meters on and off. / liliGets re-reads and final reads. / liliMay drive City vehicles. / liliPerforms related work as required. / li / ulpstrongMinimum Qualifications : / strong Education, Training, and Experience : High school diploma or GED equivalent AND three years increasingly responsible experience in operation of a water production plant; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. / ppKnowledge Of : Knowledge of the geography and street locations of the City. Ability to learn to read water meters. Ability to write legibly. Ability to make simple arithmetical computations. Ability and willingness to walk for long periods of time and to work out-of-doors under varying weather conditions. Ability to drive City vehicles safely and efficiently. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public. / ppSkill In : Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers and the public; effective verbal and written communication. Operating a personal computer utilizing standard software such as Microsoft Office and some specialized software.
