ABOUT TRAILKEEPERS OF OREGON

Founded in 2007, Trailkeepers of Oregon (TKO) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to protect and enhance the Oregon hiking experience through advocacy, stewardship, outreach, and education. TKO staff and volunteers build, restore, and maintain hiking trails across the state; are actively committed to promoting hikers’ interests in Oregon; and promote hiking as an activity that encourages healthy Oregonians and fosters conservation of public lands.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Trailkeepers of Oregon’s mission is to protect and enhance the Oregon hiking experience through stewardship, advocacy, outreach, and education. We are seeking someone to join our growing team who can take on a dynamic role that combines on-the-ground volunteer programming, shaping and sharing TKO’s mission and voice, and supporting organizational growth. This role is ideal for someone passionate about making Oregon’s trails and outdoor spaces safe and welcoming for all.

The Engagement Manager’s primary responsibilities are coordinating TKO’s Trail Ambassador program, supporting Trailkeepers University Crew Leader School training program, and collaborating with TKO communications and fundraising teams on related program goals.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Trail Ambassador Program (70%)

  • Lead a statewide Trail Ambassador program, including both Trailhead and Wilderness programming, managing the quality and consistency of event posting, volunteer registrations, and equipment logistics for all program regions.
  • Manage program and project budgets, prioritizing objectives and outcomes based on available funding.
  • Coordinate the Columbia Gorge and Mt Hood Ambassador program, hosting weekend Ambassador stations, and facilitating volunteer-led stations and hikes (April through October).
  • Recruit and train Trail Ambassador volunteers, including training curriculum development, monthly volunteer outreach activities, and events during the program season.
  • Grow the Trail Ambassador network across Oregon by building relationships with potential and current partner organizations, funders, volunteer groups, and land managers, with the goal of offering Ambassador activities in new regions.
  • Manage volunteer data gathering, tracking, reporting, and fulfillment for statewide Trail Ambassador activities.
  • Organize and support TKO’s Accessibility Survey Training, Site Surveying, and data collection for use on Oregonhikers.org

Volunteer Leadership Pipeline (20%)

  • Partner with the Stewardship team to host TKU Leadership School Training events (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion trainings / workshops, Crew Leader training / workshops, Ambassador trainings, others as needed), including event registrations, volunteer outreach, day-of logistics, and instruction support as needed.
  • Support volunteer retention by managing volunteer leadership pipeline–including identifying and cultivating new leaders and facilitating training opportunities for current leaders.
  • Track current Ambassador and Crew Leader development, ensuring they are up to date with volunteer position requirements, including annual background checks, as well as continuing leadership training opportunities.
  • Other Program Support (10%)

  • Schedule, attend, and / or recruit volunteers for a variety of outreach and tabling events throughout the year.
  • Field requests for group volunteer events and coordinate with other TKO staff to schedule and support these events.
  • Support TKO’s Family Friendly stewardship program through Crew Leader recruitment, event posting, managing volunteer registrations, equipment logistics oversight, and in-person event leading as needed.
  • Collaborate with communications and fundraising staff to share program successes with funders, donors, prospects, and volunteers.
  • Manage and delegate the experience and support for volunteers from first sign-up through program participation.
  • DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated ability to work with people of diverse races, ages, genders, sexual orientations, abilities, and economic backgrounds.
  • A passion for TKO’s mission, vision, and values, and an interest in protecting trails and connecting people to the outdoor spaces of Oregon.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a desire to ensure a safe, fun, and quality volunteer experience.
  • Experience recruiting, training, and leading volunteers, including in-person and virtual events.
  • Experience developing communications strategies and digital content.
  • Experience using database systems (or similar) to create reports, templates, and forms.
  • A high level of individual initiative, creativity, and the ability to work independently to plan, prioritize, and organize a dynamic workload with limited supervision.
  • Attention to detail, high standards, and accuracy, especially error‐free data entry and writing.
  • Ability to travel periodically to support state-wide stewardship efforts.
  • This position requires a valid driver’s license in good standing.
  • EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Formal education is not required for this role. However, a strongly aligned skillset is. Please take care to write a resume and a letter of interest that concisely explain your experience and why you’re right for this role.

Studies show that women and people of color are less likely to apply for jobs unless they believe they meet every qualification listed in a job description. TKO values lived experience, and we are dedicated to embracing diversity. If this role sounds exciting to you, we want to hear from you!
