JOB TITLE: Music/Orchestra Teacher
CLASSIFICATION: Full-time, school-year, exempt

REPORTS TO: Principal
POSITION SUMMARY:
Plan and coordinate a K-8 Music Education program that is consistent with the adopted school curriculum and promotes intellectual growth and music appreciation among students. Plan and direct an upper elementary and middle school instrumental program.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Provide music instruction consistent with approved curriculum to assist all students in mastering standards and benchmarks.
- Demonstrate professional skills in providing effective planning for instruction, implementing effective lesson designs, motivating students to achieve at appropriate grade levels, and utilizing a variety of appropriate instructional techniques.
- Develop and implement appropriate performance based assessments (portfolios, teacher-constructed tests, and rubric evaluations).
- Develop and implement a school band program, providing necessary assessment and testing, instruction and scheduling.
- Identify appropriate instructional materials, instruments, and resources for program implementation.
- Develop and implement school wide and community musical / theatrical performances coinciding with seasonal activities and to demonstrate knowledge and skill of students.
- Demonstrate professional organizational skills by preparing and submitting clear usable lesson plans, maintaining substitute plans and activities and preparing and submitting progress reports, report cards, and completing student file information within the appropriate time frames.
- Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with peers, administrators, community members, support staff, students, and parents.
- Establish and maintain on-going communication with parents through timely notification of academic and behavioral problems, providing information on student accomplishments and achievements, providing timely follow up with parent inquires and requests for meetings, and maintaining respectful and courteous communications with parents under all circumstances.
- Comply with exceptional education programs by participating in Student Assistance Team meetings, IEP meetings, and implementing appropriate educational programs within the classroom.
- Maintain an organized and effective classroom environment. Develop a classroom discipline policy as directed by the principal and monitor student behavior and compliance with the policy.
- Maintain accurate pupil accounting records.
- Develop and maintain an on going inventory of all texts, equipment, furniture, and supplies assigned to classroom.
- Serve on School Committees as requested or assigned.
- Must hold and maintain current CPI certification in verbal de-escalation and physical restraint (training provided by the school district).
- Other related duties as assigned.
ACCOUNTABILITY:
- Responsible for appropriate and meaningful instruction to foster academic, social, and intellectual development of students and to instill in them an appreciation for the arts.
- Responsible for the safety and well being of all students assigned to classroom or other area of supervision.
CONTACTS:
Has contact with students, staff, parents, community members, School Board members, Intermediate School District personnel, consultants, vendors, and Charter Authorizers, and volunteers.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate, K-8 Music Endorsement.
- Minimum of two years K-8 instructional experience in music education, including vocal and instrumental preferred.
- Must have knowledge and ability to provide individualized instruction in a variety of instruments.
- Experience in developing and implementing curriculum in a variety of music areas required.
- Must have excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, and be proficient in computer software applications.
- Must have patience and tolerance and be able to work effectively in stressful conditions.
- Demonstrates good communication skills with parents and professionalism in a variety of situations.
- Must complete and pass a criminal history background check according to applicable laws and school board policies.
- Must comply with all rules and regulations pertaining to safety.
- Must be able to speak English (speak, read, write, and comprehend).
