The MLT & MLS is a valued step in UPMC Laboratory Career Ladder. The final candidate will be placed in the appropriate title and pay rate depending on education and experience.
Responsibilities:

- Interact courteously and professionally with all laboratory customers; respond promptly to phone and in‑person inquiries.
- Maintain positive, professional communication with internal and external contacts.
- Follow all laboratory and hospital policies, including procedures, quality control, quality assurance, safety, compliance, and personnel guidelines.
- Collect and process specimens per established protocols, including performing phlebotomy when required; ensure sample appropriateness and stability.
- Perform qualitative and quantitative testing with accuracy, precision, and efficiency.
- Identify critical, abnormal, or unacceptable results and follow established protocols for follow‑up and documentation.
- Recognize factors affecting test outcomes and initiate corrective actions as needed.
- Troubleshoot issues related to instrumentation, methodology, specimens, supplies, or results following defined protocols.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, performing scheduled QC checks, preventive maintenance, calibration, and minor repairs.
- Manage supplies responsibly by using reagents efficiently and maintaining appropriate inventory levels.
- Maintain strong working knowledge of laboratory principles, techniques, instrumentation, and physiological factors affecting results.
- Assist with test development, evaluation, selection, and implementation of new methodologies or equipment.
- Perform high‑complexity testing independently as defined by PA DOH.
- Provide first‑line supervisory support when assigned.
- Train and orient new employees, students, and residents as applicable.
MLS:
Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of an accredited Medical Lab Scientist program, OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP or equivalent categorical or MLT certification, OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND at least two years? experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) in a clinical laboratory. Prefer 1 year experience in a hospital laboratory. Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred.
MLT:
Associate's degree in a laboratory science with certification (or eligible new graduate) from an accredited institution as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science, with 6 months of clinical laboratory experience OR equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 for individuals performing high complexity testing. Minimum 1year's experience in a hospital laboratory preferred. Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) (ASCP) or equivalent certification preferred. New York License required for NY locations.
