Assistant Professor, Hydrology

Position Summary

The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences (EPS) at the University of New Mexico invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Hydrology with a start date as early as January 2026. We seek candidates with research expertise in any area of hydrology, including but not limited to hydrogeology, water quality, surface water/ground water interactions, or hydroclimatology. This position offers an exciting opportunity to advance hydrological research with a focus on the unique water and climate dynamics of arid and semi-arid regions. Applicants must have a PhD in Hydrology, Geoscience, or a related field by date of appointment. For best consideration, all application materials must be received by July 14, 2025.

The successful candidate is expected to develop an externally funded research program that addresses critical hydrological challenges as outlined by the National Academies of Science and Engineering. Their research will contribute to addressing grand challenges in water science at UNM by participating in interdisciplinary initiatives such as the ARID Institute, the Water Resources Program, and collaborations with other departments on campus. We welcome candidates with expertise that complements existing departmental strengths in geochemistry, geophysics, and climate. The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences has a full-time tenured/tenure track faculty of 13 and offers undergraduate degrees in Earth and Planetary Sciences and Environmental Science, and . and . degrees in Earth and Planetary Sciences. EPS facilities include state-of-the-art analytical laboratories for water chemistry, stable isotopes, and environmental monitoring, as well as access to high-performance computing facilities and field sites across New Mexico's diverse hydrogeologic settings.

The new faculty member will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in hydrology and related areas, incorporating modern computational approaches and data-driven methodologies into the curriculum. They are also expected to supervise master and doctoral students, and contribute to core, required undergraduate courses. The position offers opportunities to collaborate with researchers across UNM and at nearby national laboratories, as well as state and federal agencies.
