Operating Room (OR) Registered Nurse - New England Baptist Hospital

Full Time Operating room Registered Nurse - 40 Hour Day / Rot

Job Description : JOB SUMMARY :

The Registered Nurse systematically and continuously collects and assesses data in collaboration with the interprofessional team to provide therapeutic care with the patient and / or family. He / she performs all required elements of a nursing assessment including but not limited to physical examination, assessment of readiness to learn, psychosocial assessment, functional assessment and utilization of patient / family specific assessment scales as required.

The Registered Nurse is an active member of the inter-professional team and collaborates in the development, execution and evaluation of the interprofessional plan of care or critical pathway. The Registered Nurse considers factors related to safety, effectiveness and cost in planning and delivering care. The Registered Nurse's decisions and actions with patients and families are determined in an ethical manner.

The Registered Nurse establishes goals and strategies for meeting the discharge or continuing care needs with the patient, family, and / or other care provider. The Registered Nurse provides care in collaboration with other nursing staff members; he / she delegates and supervises care in accordance with nurse practice acts and the professional nursing role.

The Registered Nurse utilizes evidence-based practice and research findings in his / her practice. He / she demonstrates knowledge of and participates in continuous improvement activities. The Registered Nurse acquires and maintains knowledge in nursing practice and assumes responsibility for the professional development of self, other nursing staff and students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to) :

The registered nurse systematically and continuously collects and assesses data in collaboration with the interprofessional team to provide therapeutic care with the patient and family.

Establishes an in-depth data base by assessing the behavioral and physiologic status of the patient utilizing interview, observation, physical examination, and other available data.

Integrates nursing interventions into the interprofessional plan of care, incorporating appropriate standards of care and practice and patient outcomes.

Implements safe, competent, and efficient patient and family care within policies, procedures and standards, and interventions as noted on the interprofessional plan of care.

Sets priorities adapting to changing patient and unit / clinic situations. In response to data indicating urgent and / or emergent risk to patient, initiates action to reduce or correct risk.

Assumes responsibility and accountability for effectively managing nursing care of individual patients / families as a team member.

Documents the nursing process to reflect a comprehensive and integrated approach to patient and family care.

Evaluates patient's responses to care based on effectiveness of nursing interventions / actions in relationship to established outcomes and consults with Medical Staff, Surgical Team, Hospitalist Team, Clinical Leader, Case Manager, and Rehabilitation Team regarding clinical variances and recommended changes to the plan of care.

Identifies learning needs of patients / families and teaches by adapting standard information to provide individualized and comprehensive teaching and learning.

Quality and Patient Safety

The registered nurse systematically and continuously collects and assesses data in collaboration with the interprofessional team to monitor outcomes of care processes.

Use improvement methods to design and test changes to continuously improve the quality and safety of healthcare systems.

Performs services in compliance with established practice standards, policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, statutes and regulations

Participates in hospital and / or unit-based patient safety and quality activities and uses principles to support and improve patient outcomes.

Minimize risk of harm to patients and providers through both system effectiveness and individual performance.

Demonstrates professional commitment and is responsible for ensuring patient safety.

Resource Utilization

The registered nurse considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, and cost in planning and delivering care. The registered nurse demonstrates knowledge of care delivery system as interprofessional and multifaceted with a variety of entry and access points along the care continuum.

Contributes to and supports the effective management of the care area.

Acts to be fiscally responsible

Effectively utilizes technology to support practice and efficiencies in care delivery.

Teamwork and Collaboration :

Functions effectively within nursing and interprofessional teams, fostering open communication, mutual respect, and shared decision-making to achieve quality patient care.

Communicates and collaborates with the patient, family, significant others, and health care providers in providing patient care.

Effectively delegates appropriate patient care activities to other members of the patient care team with appropriate knowledge and skill levels.

Maintains a collaborative work relationship with peers and colleagues in order to create a positive and professional work environment.

Takes initiative to share knowledge and skills willingly with colleagues, students and novice practitioners in a collegial manner.

Patient-centered Care :

Recognize the patient or designee as the source of control and full partner in providing compassionate and coordinated care based on respect for patient's preferences, values, and needs.

Provides direct care to patients and makes necessary nursing judgments to ensure all patient populations are appropriately cared for.

Designs and implements individualized patient care plans reflective of current nursing practice standards, policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines.

Assesses presence and levels of pain as well as physical and emotional comfort.

Informs and educates patient of expected outcomes before, during, and after medical procedures.

Explains patient privacy requirements to patient, families and visitors and maintains patient privacy ensuring compliance with HIPAA and NEBH standards, policies and procedures.

Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) Research :

Integrate best current evidence with clinical expertise and patient / family preferences and values for delivery of optimal health care.

Participates in ongoing educational and professional development activities to enhance clinical knowledge and update requisite skills.

Identifies recurring clinical practice issues and contributes to the development of specific plans to address identified issues.

Demonstrates knowledge of research findings related to clinical specialty.

Informatics :

Use information and technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support decision making.

Documents and updates the patient medical records in accordance with NEBH and department-specific policies and procedures.

Education and Professional Development

The registered nurse acquires and maintains current knowledge in nursing practice and assumes responsibility of the professional development of self, other nursing staff, and students.

Evaluates own performance and that of peers and other nursing peers in relation to standards.

Demonstrates an awareness of elements in own performance needing further development and seeks opportunities to improve.

Contributes to the learning experiences of students in cooperation with the instructor and other staff.

Ethics

The registered nurse's decisions and actions with patients and families are determined in an ethical manner.

Demonstrates sensitivity to the values of self and others.

Participates in activities designed to broaden ethical decision-making skills.

QUALIFICATIONS : MA RN License

BLS Certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross preferred

ACLS Certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross preferred

Experience working at a teaching hospital and / or specialty area expertise

EDUCATION :

  • Bachelor's Degree

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE :

  • 0-1 year of experience
  • Pay Range : $37.00 - $95.37

    The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
