We are are seeking a hard-driving Investigative Reporter at our headquarters in Minneapolis MN. who has the background to dig for hidden documents and the savvy to find and manage key sources. We’re looking to grow our investigative team in Minnesota, a state that has increasingly at the center of national news conversations including policing, immigration, public safety, business, politics and fraud.

You should have impeccable news judgment and journalistic ethics; deep experience doing data analysis; an uncanny ability to find and lock down important sources; a track record of doing accountability reporting that produces substantial results; and be a compelling storyteller who can connect hidden facts with an engaging and educated audience.

You will succeed in this role if you have both the stamina to spend several months deep in a project, as well as the ability to do quick-turn investigative or accountability reporting off of significant breaking or developing news.

A collaborative spirit and flexibility are essential, as is a dogged commitment to holding power to account.

You will:

  • Be enterprising and entrepreneurial. Our readers most value revelatory and enterprising investigative reporting not seen elsewhere.
  • Be a relentless news hound. You will have the ability to find the story in a trove of documents, can locate and protect whistleblowers, and understands how to do investigative work that advances breaking news stories.
  • Be ambitious. You’ll lean into tough story assignments that other reporters avoid.
  • Have a variety of reporting techniques and is comfortable telling stories on different formats.
  • Be audience centric. You will seek out and use data about where our audience is – and where we can reach new audiences – and work to meet their needs and interests.
  • Be a watchdog willing to hold government agencies and private interests accountable for how they wield power and influence.
  • Collaborate with reporters and editors in other newsroom departments to help identify and elevate accountability reporting opportunities.
  • Collaborate with your editors and the Audience team to build avenues for engagement and amplification of your work and the Star Tribune.
  • Meet deadlines on stories from the quick- turn to the long-range.
  • Work regularly from the Star Tribune’s downtown Minneapolis headquarters.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience – at least 4 years at a daily news outlet.
  • A portfolio of published investigative and watchdog work that exhibits solid news judgment, deep reporting, engaging writing and comfort with a broad range of topics.
  • A solid grasp of data and analysis tools, and state and federal data practices statutes.
  • An ability to connect with sources and subjects from diverse backgrounds and include overlooked or ignored viewpoints.
  • High standards and a commitment to fairness and accuracy.
  • The ability to multitask and juggle priorities on deadline.
  • A commitment to using 21st century digital tools including Artificial Intelligence, tracking and analyzing online audience trends and building strategies to engage readers.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, track story budgets and multitask in a high-pressure environment.
  • A commitment to the Star Tribune’s standards, mission and values, including journalism that reflects the diversity of Minnesota and the Star Tribune’s audience.
  • Must be currently legally authorized to work in the without sponsorship for employment visa status (, H1B status, 0-1, TM, CPT, OPT, etc.). We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.

Compensation Range:

This is an A4-scale level position in the contract. Compensation may increase from the contractual $84, annually based on a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies and experience.
