Salary and Benefits

Starting salary for newly appointed Border Patrol Agents ranges from $51,632 to $92,219 based on grade level (GL-5 / GL-7). You will receive access to extensive federal employment benefits, including health, dental, and various insurance plans, a generous leave program, and the option to participate in the Thrift Savings Plan, akin to a traditional ROTH 401(k).

Recruitment Incentive

Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents are eligible for incentives of up to $20,000. The first $10,000 is granted upon successful completion of the Border Patrol Academy, while the remaining $10,000 is available for selecting a prioritized duty location.

Retention Incentive

New Border Patrol Agents may qualify for up to $40,000 in additional incentives spread across their first four years.

Duty Locations

Be ready for potential assignments at critical locations, including the Southwest Border. The U.S. Border Patrol will determine duty assignments based on operational needs, which may differ from preferred locations. Relocation may be required.

This position offers a career progression path through GL-5, GL-7, GL-9, GS-11, and GS-12, with eligibility for promotions based on the successful completion of one year in each grade.

Duties and Responsibilities

As a Border Patrol Agent, you will be a vital part of a dedicated team focused on safeguarding the American public by securing borders, deterring illegal activities, and promoting economic prosperity. Typical responsibilities include :

  • Detecting and questioning individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs laws, and inspecting relevant documents and belongings.
  • Preventing and apprehending undocumented individuals and smugglers near borders, employing surveillance techniques, including infrared scopes for nighttime operations.
  • Interpreting and following physical evidence related to unlawful entries.
  • Conducting checks of farms, buildings, roads, and urban areas.
  • Patrolling international boundaries and coastal waterways using government vehicles and other assets.

Qualifications

For GL-5 grade level :

  • One year of general work experience demonstrating your leadership, decision-making abilities, and capacity to stay composed in stressful situations, or
  • A bachelor’s degree in any field from an accredited institution, or
  • A combination of relevant experience and education will be assessed based on your resume and provided transcripts.
  • For GL-7 grade level :

  • One year of specialized work experience demonstrating your ability to make judicious judgments regarding the use of firearms and effectively engage with individuals in law enforcement scenarios, or
  • A bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement, or one year of graduate-level education related to law enforcement, or
  • A combination of experience and education will be reviewed using your resume and supporting documents.
  • Important Considerations

  • Citizenship : Applicants must be U.S. Citizens.
  • Residency : Candidates should have resided in the U.S. (including protectorates) for at least three of the last five years.
  • Age Restriction : Candidates must be referred for selection before their 40th birthday in accordance with law enforcement retirement provisions.
