WEEKLY HOURS - .5 COURSE CREDIT : No more than 10 hours per week. No more than 6 hours per day, plus complete a self-reflection project and present it during the last week of the internship. Currently a 1 - 2 semester limit.

The internship is unpaid, and interns will not receive any financial compensation.

WHEN WORK HAPPENS : Monday through Friday, 8 : 40 AM - 3 : 00 PM unless instructed differently by your SEL Teacher / Advisor / Mentor Contact Name above.

Summary of Position

Students will learn business operations, customer service, organizational skills, money management, inventory skills, food safety, retail skills, janitorial duties, and a variety of soft skills. Work-based learning will be provided through opportunities for students to participate in a variety of job rotations. Students will gain retail, food, and culinary industry, cleaning services, and customer service experience by operating the school's PBIS store, Hawk Closet, snack bar, coffee cart, delivering copies, collecting recycling, working the Winter Arts and Craft Fair, gardening, and completing janitorial duties. With instruction and supervision, students will learn and expand their hard skills and gain experience, making them more marketable and prepared for the working world.

Coffee / Snack Bar -Students will operate our school coffee cart and snack bar during events. Duties include :

  • Taking orders
  • Cooking
  • Preparing orders
  • Operating cooking equipment (i.e., crock pot, coffee pot, popcorn, etc.)
  • Collecting payment, counting back change, and cash register usage
  • Taking inventory
  • Ordering / organizing supplies
  • Assisting with account deposits

Soar Store - Students will operate the school's PBIS Store. Duties include :

  • Taking inventory
  • Stocking / restocking
  • Taking and communicating orders
  • Managing orders in PBIS software
  • Janitorial - students complete janitorial duties to maintain a clean space. Duties include :

  • Outdoor trash cleanup
  • Washing lunch tables
  • Vacuuming
  • Sweeping
  • Mopping
  • Delivering supplies (paper towels / trash bags / recycling bins)
  • Disinfection (door knobs, light switches, water fountains)
  • Window cleaning
  • Cleanup after events (assemblies / class meetings / cooking)
  • Recycling - students will run a school-wide recycling program. Duties include :

  • Making recycling signs / announcements
  • Taking inventory of classes that need boxes
  • Label and deliver boxes
  • Collecting the school's recycling
  • Dumping recycling in the appropriate bins
  • Copies - students will deliver copies to staff members. Duties include :

  • Collecting and organizing copies
  • Delivering copies to the appropriate classes
  • Hawk Closet -Students will operate the school care closet. Duties include :

  • Taking inventory
  • Participating in donation drives
  • Sorting, washing, drying, folding, and hanging clothes
  • Restocking
  • Labeling and organizing by size and items
  • Prepare to-go kits (i.e., food, toiletries, school supplies, and clothing bags).
  • Craft Fair -Students will help with the operation of the school craft fair. Duties include :

  • Assist in booth layout (i.e., measuring booth sizes - 4x6, 6x8, 8x10, numbering and labeling booths, ensuring special requests are followed)
  • Making crafts to sell (i.e., apple butter, jam, bath bombs, bath salts, stocking stuffers)
  • Working snack bar (i.e, setup and breakdown, taking orders, preparing orders, operating percolators / single-serve machine, stocking inventory, updating snack board, working the cash register )
  • Coffee / snack cart(i.e,. setup and breakdown, taking and preparing orders, collecting payment, taking inventory, organizing supplies)
  • Silent auction table (i.e., setup and breakdown, collecting auction items, explaining processes, ensuring paperwork is filled out with required information)
  • Working program booth (i.e, setup / breakdown, explaining / selling goods, cash exchange)
  • Checking in on vendors (i.e., guiding them to booths, helping set up and break down, guiding them to the bathrooms, snack bar, and vendor refreshment area, restocking refreshment area, passing out and collecting vendor feedback form)
  • Guiding craft fair attendees
  • Setup and breakdown (i.e., sweeping, putting up and taking down signs, taking out trash, disinfecting, moving tables)
  • Assisting with account deposits
  • Garden -Students will take care of our school garden. Duties include :

  • Watering
  • Planting
  • Pruning / trimming
  • Weeding
  • Harvesting
  • Building planter boxes
  • Composting
  • Cooking and canning items from the garden

    We want to enhance our career curriculum by providing students with increased opportunities to make connections and apply learned skills across settings. We would augment the learning process by providing meaningful engagement that extends outside the traditional school setting through field trips, work-simulated activities. This would increase in-depth engagement, motivation, and real-world applications by allowing students to take part in work-site tours and volunteer work. Students would further their career development and exploration through observation and learning about job descriptions and requirements in various job settings. Volunteer and intern work would also allow students to practice soft and hard skills in a variety of real-world settings. Workplace Readiness Training will be completed through employability and life skills classes. In these classes, students will learn about interpersonal communication, active listening, time management, and leadership skills. Students will learn time management, financial literacy, disability rights in the workplace, computer applications, job search, and interviewing skills. Students will learn how to complete applications and write resumes, and cover letters.

    We would expand on our current work, simulated job rotation, by providing access to gain a variety of employability skills. We would like to provide options for students to further work readiness skills by providing structured exposure for opportunities to practice self-advocacy, social, communication, and interpersonal skills within the school and out in the community. We would like to expand their work readiness and life skills by providing access to presentations, workshops, and / or certifications of interest (i.e. CPR, First Aid, Food Safety, Driver's Education, Disability Awareness, ADA, Financial Literacy etc...) These work-based learning and work readiness training programs will give students valuable experiences. As a result, students will be better equipped and prepared to transition into the workforce.
