Controller Job Description
The Controller is responsible for overseeing the financial operations of the organization,
ensuring accuracy, transparency, and compliance across all accounting, budgeting, and
financial reporting functions. This role provides strategic financial leadership, supports
organizational decision-making, and ensures strong internal controls and fiscal
Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting – 50%
Oversee all accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts
receivable, payroll, and bank reconciliations
Prepare and maintain accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in
accordance with GAAP
Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting for internal leadership, board of directors,
and external stakeholders
Develop, monitor, and manage annual operating and capital budgets in collaboration
with leadership and department heads
Analyze financial performance and provide variance analysis, forecasts, and actionable
insights to leadership
Ensure proper accounting treatment of grants, contracts, sponsorships, and restricted
funds
Coordinate and manage the annual audit process, including preparation of schedules,
liaison with auditors, and timely resolution of findings
Compliance, Controls & Risk Management – 25%
Establish and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard organizational assets and
ensure financial integrity
Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including tax
filings and reporting requirements
Oversee cash management, banking relationships, and investment accounts
Develop and document financial policies, procedures, and controls to ensure
consistency and best practices
Monitor organizational risk related to financial operations and recommend mitigation
strategies
Strategic & Organizational Support – 15%
Serve as a financial thought partner to the President & CEO and senior leadership team
Provide financial modeling and analysis to support strategic initiatives, new programs,
and long-term planning
Support board meetings with clear, concise financial materials and presentations
Collaborate with development and program teams to ensure financial alignment with
organizational goals
Team Leadership & Collaboration – 10%
Supervise and support accounting and finance staff, fostering a high-performing and
collaborative team
Provide training, guidance, and professional development to finance team members
Work closely with other departments (development, marketing, operations, etc.) to align
financial processes and organizational objectives
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field (CPA or CMA preferred)
At least seven years of progressive accounting or financial management experience,
including supervisory responsibility
Demonstrated experience with budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and audit
management
Strong knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, and nonprofit or public-sector accounting
practices (if applicable)
Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with a high level of
attention to detail
Ability to communicate complex financial information clearly to non-financial audiences,
including senior leadership and board members
Strong leadership, collaboration, time management, and adaptability skills
