Job Summary :

Under general direction the Facilities Maintenance Mechanic will support the San Bernardino (CSUSB) and Palm Desert Campus (PDC) by independently performing a variety of skilled preventative and general maintenance repair construction and renovation work on facilities and systems. These duties include but are not limited to maintaining servicing and repairing swimming pools fountains heating ventilation air conditioning Hydronics and plumbing in the Central Heating and Air Conditioning Plant and in decentralized utility centers throughout the campuses and as listed on the CSU Classification Standards of a Facilities Maintenance Mechanic.

Responsibilities :

  • Swimming Pool & Fountain : Performs a variety of preventative and general maintenance tasks including but not limited to operations inspections cleaning back washing chemical testing logging repairing and treating water chemistry for the University swimming pool(s) and fountain(s). Follows campus procedures in accordance with Safety and Health Standards.
  • Maintenance Repairs & Temperature Calls : Maintains quality levels under the guidance of a Building Service Engineer(BSE) or Lead Building Service Engineer (LBSE) and shall meet applicable building and safety standards. Maintains records and data related to work performed using manual and / or computerized record-keeping systems. Prepares standard reports for supervisors as requested. Cleans and maintains materials tools and equipment used to perform duties. Performs Reactive Preventative and Predictive maintenance and repairs on HVAC equipment and control systems including determining the root cause of failure troubleshooting and repairing equipment and / or systems. Utilizes specialized equipment to make repairs to return the equipment back into operation. Installs Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) aftermarket parts and equipment controls and makes modifications and alterations to equipment with the approval of the HVAC supervisor or Chief Engineer. Performs preventative maintenance on HVAC equipment in the Central Plant and in decentralized facilities. Provides maintenance and repairs to Boilers Chillers Cooling Towers Pumps Fans and other ancillary equipment throughout campuses. Calibrates tests adjusts and repairs HVAC & equipment which will include but is not limited to compressor changeouts refrigerant charging and evacuating ancillary systems in the Central Plant and on-campus buildings as assigned and required to maintain safe proper operations and as necessitated by system upsets and / or emergencies under the guidance of a BSE LBSE Supervisor or Chief Engineer.
  • Plant Operator : Operates and maintains Heating and Air Conditioning Plant machinery and systems in accordance with accepted Good Engineering Practices regarding methods housekeeping and general practices and in accordance with posted instructions memos and verbal orders. Performs routine shift duties in accordance with posted instructions and at times and frequencies specified. Tests and treats water according to posted instructions and as necessary to ensure proper protection of all affected systems. Maintains logs charts and records in accordance with posted instruction logs. Operates DDC Facility Control Networks which include but is not limited to monitoring of environmental conditions of remote HVAC systems and equipment (including remote room temperatures) and scheduling of various HVAC systems for routine and special events.
  • Equipment Inspections : Provides routine inspections to determine the safety and functionality of operating conditions of the equipment. Reports any malfunctions and / or abnormal conditions which require additional corrective action to supervisor and updates the control room status board. Equipment shall be inspected based on Manufacture recommendations or by the policy of the University based on factual data.
  • House Keeping : Maintains inventory of materials and supplies and keeps supervisors informed of needs. Keeps floors equipment rooms utility tunnel and aisles clear and clean. Promptly cleans up debris from work processes. Keeps floors tools and equipment grease-free and clean for a safe and clean work environment. Uses all required safety devices and equipment and follows all verbal and written safety instructions. Conducts fire safety practices such as storing oil rags in a covered metal container.
  • Other classification-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications : Required Education and Experience

These abilities normally would be acquired through four years of increasingly responsible experience leading to journey-level skills in a mechanical or facilities / building trade or any equivalent combination of training and experience as a facilities and systems mechanic which demonstrates the achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of an applicable apprenticeship program.

Required Qualifications

Knowledge : Work requires thorough knowledge of the methods materials equipment and tools used in one skilled trade area; working knowledge of materials methods equipment and tools in related trade areas pertaining to facilities systems construction and renovation; thorough knowledge of generally accepted trade practices in trade specialty; working knowledge of computerized maintenance and building automation systems; working knowledge of applicable building and safety codes and regulations related to facilities systems and renovations.

Abilities : Must be able to demonstrate journey-level skill in one trade and strong skills in other applicable trades; operate construction and related equipment; use considerable judgment and discretion in performing duties; read interpret and work from blueprints plans drawings and specifications; make rough sketches; estimate cost time and materials of maintenance repair and renovation work; maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and / or computerized record-keeping systems; prepare standard reports; provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants; analyze and respond to emergency situations; read and write at a level appropriate to the position; and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of basic computer based Programs( Excel Word Adobe).

Trade level experience or equivalent education Certified Pool Operator Certification EPA - Universal License.

HVAC Certification or Field related experience.

TMA CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System).

Compensation and Benefits :

Anticipated Step Placement : $5 355.00 - $5462.00 per month (Step 1 - Step 2)

Classification Salary Steps : $5 355.00 - $7 801 per month (Step 1 - Step 20)

The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.

The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical dental and vision plans membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) sick and vacation time and 15 paid holidays a year. Work status : Full-time / Non-Exempt / Probationary

Academic year schedule : Monday through Friday (7 : 00 am 3 : 30 pm) some evenings / weekends.

Summer schedule : Monday through Thursday (6 : 00 am - 4 : 30 pm) some evenings / weekends.
