The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City's evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts. The DOC seeks to recruit a Medical Assistant (Part Time) who will assist physicians, nurses, and other medical staff by performing administrative and clinical duties under the direction of a physician. Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records. Clinical duties may include such preparing treatment room for patient exams, recording patient medical history, chaperone and cleaning and sterilizing medical equipment. The candidate will be responsible for but not limited to : - Escort patients / candidates to exam rooms and conduct intake interviews. - Measure and document vital signs, including weight, blood pressure, pulse, and temperature. - Ensure all reports, labs, and documentation are completed and available in the patient's / candidate's medical record before appointments. - Maintain confidentiality and secure patient / candidate information in all medical records. - Prepare exam and treatment rooms for patient / candidate visits. - Assist the physician during examinations and procedures. - Disinfect and clean exam / treatment rooms following each visit, adhering to safety and infection-control standards. - Keep exam rooms stocked with adequate medical supplies and maintain instruments, including sterilization and proper disposal of contaminated materials. - Manage supply inventory, place orders, and verify receipt of supplies. - Answer phones, relay messages, and provide accurate feedback and information to patients / candidates and physicians. - Record patient / candidate medical histories, vital statistics, and test results in medical files. - Perform routine screening tests, including Pulmonary Function Tests, EKGs, vision and hearing screenings, and administer drug tests. - Conduct medical orientations as needed. - Perform other related duties as assigned. Preferred Skills - CPR and First Aid Certification. - Certification as a medical assistant (CMA). - Excellent verbal and written communication skills. - Experience using a multi-line phone system. - Ability to read, understand, and accurately follow instructions. - Ability to demonstrate compassion when dealing with others. - Ability to adapt to change. - Ability to prioritize workload while remaining flexible. - Knowledge in the fields of medicine, anatomy and physiology.
1. A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization; or 2. Completion of the eleventh grade of high school, and one year of full-time satisfactory experience performing health-related or clerical duties; or 3. Education and / or experience that is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have completed the eleventh grade of high school.
