Pharmacy-Inpatient

  • The Pharmacy Automation Administrator is responsible for the day-to-day operation and long-term success of all pharmacy automation systems, which ultimately impacts the ability to provide safe and efficient patient care. The Pharmacy Automation Administrator will report to a member of the Inpatient Pharmacy Operations Leadership Team but will work with other department and system leaders for pharmacy automation related needs. This role will be responsible for all functional aspects of the pharmacy automation systems, including but not limited to: user management, hardware and software troubleshooting, database management, project planning, vendor relationship management, reporting and data analytics, optimization of the system and integration of the pharmacy automation system within pharmacy workflows. They contribute to the overall operational and financial success of the organization through the safe, effective, and efficient medication use process. They are involved in the long-term planning and implementation of new automation and upgrades to existing hardware and software. They will maintain the knowledge and skills of a pharmacy technician and will assist with cross functional support of the inpatient pharmacy department dependent on operational needs.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain the functional and operational integrity of pharmacy automation systems including but not limited to: user management, equipment troubleshooting, service calls/follow-up, inventory maintenance, general audits and cycle counts, record management, and system upgrades. Manages projects related to the implementation of new pharmacy automation and software including but not limited to: coordination and communication with vendor and Health System IT support, timeline and project plan development, set up, inventory assignments and stocking, training and education, and post go-live support and optimization.Coordinates Omnicell system changes and decisions with representatives from other Penn Medicine facilities. Serves as a resource for pharmacy automation needs at other Penn Medicine facilities as needed and able. Utilizes data analytics and operational knowledge to optimize medication inventory throughout the system. Contributes to the financial performance of the organization through the reduction of excess inventory, optimization of inventory turns, and reduction in expired medications. Maintains and updates the Omnicell database (used by the entire health system) by adjusting item, user, and machine configurations.Manages the ECRI portal for the ADCs, which involves coordinating with Drug Information, pharmacy leadership, and front line employees to ensure recalled products are removed from ADCs. Builds and utilizes reports within pharmacy automation systems and EHR. Assists in report monitoring, data analysis and interpretation, and summarizing and presenting data for review by pharmacy leadership and other disciplines. Serves as a liaison with Epic Willow team and provides support and troubleshooting for interface issues between Epic and pharmacy automation systems. Assists pharmacy leadership in workflow development and optimization as it relates to pharmacy automation systems and system capabilities. Maintains knowledge and assists with evaluation of new technology and functionality from pharmacy automation system vendors. Maintains knowledge and competency of a pharmacy technician and helps complete duties as assigned to support the department, entity, and health system organization. Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures.

Credentials:

  • Pharmacy Technician Certification CPhT (Required)

  • ASHP Pharmacy Informatics Certification (Required)

  • Epic Willow Inpatient Proficiency (Required)

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)

  • And 5+ years Healthcare and/or IT related experience (Required) - OR Bachelor's Degree Information Systems, Data Analytics, Health IT and 1+ years Healthcare and/or IT related experience (Preferred)

  • Prior experience with automation dispensing / Information/Medication Order Entry systems (Required)
