What you'll do

We are thrilled to announce an exciting opportunity for an onsite Product Designer to join our dynamic team in Carlsbad, CA!

You will join the Software Experiences Design team, which applies essential Human Centered Research & Design methods across many diverse features and experiences powering Viasat's Commercial products and services. We're seeking a Product Designer eager to tackle a range of product and design service challenges within Viasat Commercial Services. You will work closely with other designers, engineers, and product managers to develop intuitive, scalable experiences that improve how people connect and communicate. This role suits someone who enjoys rapid learning, adapting to new problems, and experimenting with AI tools in a growing design environment.

This position reports to a Sr. Manager, Product & Service Design, and the opportunity is based in our Carlsbad Office, CA. As a hybrid position, this role provides the advantage of collaborating in-person for three or more days each week, while also allowing the flexibility to work remotely two days a week.

The day-to-day

• Build clear, scalable experiences in collaboration with others across the Software Experiences Design team.
• Participate in problem discovery and ideation, turning insights into clear user flows, prototypes, and build solutions.
• Work closely with colleagues from different departments to agree on requirements and carry projects from idea through to completion.
• Use AI tools to accelerate research, generate ideas, and explore build variations. Help lead the charge in using AI to push creative limits and drive efficiency and performance.
• Apply excellence in interaction and visual design.
• Present your work clearly and incorporate feedback often.
• Support, and carry out your own, usability testing and research efforts to learn directly from users and continuously improve designs.
• Take work through all stages of research & design, from requirements definition to final visual design production and everything in between.
• Ship great design work quickly.
• Form relationships and collaborate closely with diverse groups (Engineering, Product Management, Customer Success, etc.) to support the delivery of great products and solutions.
• Collaborate with other members of the design team to help compose an end-to-end vision of the customer experience.
• Help facilitate conversations and workshops with diverse groups.

What you'll need

• 2-4 years of product research & design experience.
• Ability to blend creative flair with practical design skills to enhance platform, product, and service performance and user engagement.
• Curiosity and adaptability in using new design technologies and methodologies, driven by data insights.
• Proficiency in design tools like Figma, and design systems, with an eagerness to integrate AI tools into the design process.
• Communicate clearly and thrive in collaborative, cross-functional settings.
• Enjoy learning from feedback and iterating quickly.
• Be comfortable using AI-assisted research & design tools for exploration, ideation, and research.
• Value inclusive, accessible, and human-centered design.
• Demonstrate ability to work with front-end technologies and work with engineers to implement your work.
• Storytelling, systems thinking, and visual communication skills.
• Fluency in design methods (HCD, co-creation, JTBD, design sprinting).
• Have solid presentation skills, always be able to present yourself and your work well.
• Practice professionalism, have a deep respect for your colleagues and the work.
• Be able to collaborate and work well with all personality types.
• A desire to make things better, including yourself. A healthy balance of humility and confidence.

What will help you on the job

We are looking for a strong portfolio showing quality visual, interaction , and UX research and design skills. Include a link to your initial application to be considered. Your portfolio should also show clear thinking, understanding of context, and the ability to define problems and explore solutions across many user experiences.

Preferences

• A Degree or equivalent experience in Graphic Deign, Visual Communication, Digital Media, Interaction Compose, Industrial Develop, Product Invent, Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors, Cognitive Science, or related field - or commensurate work experience.
• Experience with JIRA.
• Familiarity with Service Design practices and approaches.
• Experience working with globally distributed teams.
• Portfolio showcasing systems thinking, service journeys, and measurable outcomes.
• Experience designing services that span digital, physical, human, and automated interactions.
• Experience crafting Objectives & Key Results, or ensuring Objectives & Key Results include an experience PoV.

Travel

Travel dedication is encouraged to be roughly 10%-15%.

Salary range

$83,000.00 - $131,000.00 / annually. For specific work locations within San Jose, the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, the base pay range for this role is $103,000.00- $155,000.00/ annually
