This role is fully remote with approximately 70% travel throughout the (coast to coast).
The typical work schedule is 45-50 hours per week while in the field, with overtime eligibility of approximately 2-12 hours every two weeks. Actual hours may vary depending on on-site requirements and travel demands. For assignments that require extended travel away from home, the schedule may follow a 10-days-on / 4-days-off rotation. Travel time is paid.
Candidates must live within one hour of a major airport to be considered.

The Sr Controls Engineer designs and develops PLC programs for material handling equipment. This position has comprehensive knowledge of equipment, business, and customer requirements that drive the design of the technical solutions and participates in all phases of the product development lifecycle, including the analysis, design, electrical designs, installation support, electrical installation debugging, and support of other complementary engineering staff associated with the electrical hardware engineering. The Sr Controls Engineer works independently to resolve site requirement changes and support solutions to complete the designed equipment installation.
This role requires hands-on PLC programming expertise for complex material handling systems within distribution center environments, including the ability to design, develop, modify, and troubleshoot PLC programs from scratch throughout the full project lifecycle.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Programs systems to support equipment operations.
Interfaces with internal engineering / project management and customers to determine system requirements.
Supports electrical installation via interfacing to electrical installers.
Debugs electrical installation of controls and motor components.
Works independently to resolve site requirement changes during installation and commissioning.
Participates in commissioning activities, including on-site troubleshooting, program modification, and system optimization.
Develops PLC software using Ladder Logic programming to support complex machines and integrated systems.
Programs PLCs for material handling equipment, including conveyors, sorters, automated storage and retrieval systems (AS / RS), order picking technologies, and print / apply and weighing systems.
Develops and maintains PLC communications interfaces to external systems such as servers, scanners, scales, and other integrated devices.
Supports projects through all phases, including office-based PLC development and on-site commissioning.
Collaborates closely with electrical hardware engineers and other complimentary engineering staff to deliver fully integrated solutions.

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Degrees in Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering will be considered if prior professional experience is in controls engineering.
Graduates of BSEET programs are strongly encouraged to apply, as hands-on controls experience is highly valued.
5+ years previous professional engineering experience.
Demonstrated experience programming PLCs from scratch, not limited to modifying existing code.
Strong proficiency in Ladder Logic programming for industrial automation systems.
Hands-on experience programming PLCs for material handling equipment in distribution center environments is required.
Experience integrating PLC systems with external devices and systems (, scanners, scales, servers, and other automation interfaces).
Extensive experience with Allen Bradley (Rockwell) PLCs and Studio 5000 software is required.
Senior- and mid-level Controls Engineers are expected to be programming regularly; when in the office, work is primarily focused on PLC software development, and when on-site, work includes troubleshooting and program updates as needed.
Regular travel either locally, nationally, and / or internationally may be required.
High degree of proficiency in MS Office Suite, Outlook, and Internet applications.
Strong analytical, prioritizing, interpersonal, problem-solving, presentation, budgeting, project management (from conception to completion), and planning skills.
Strong verbal and written communication skills (including analysis, interpretation, and reasoning).
Solid understanding and application of mathematical concepts.
Ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with peers and colleagues across the organization, as well as internal and external clients.
