Job Description

Company Profile

Founded in 1977, GMO is a global investment manager committed to delivering superior long-term investment performance and advice to our clients. We offer investment strategies and solutions where we believe we are positioned to add the greatest value for our investors. These include multi-asset class, public equity, public credit, and liquid alternative offerings.

We manage approximately $78bn for a client base that includes many of the world’s most sophisticated institutions, financial intermediaries, and private clients. Industry-wide, we are well known for our focus on valuation-based investing, willingness to take bold positions when conditions warrant, and candid and academically rigorous thought leadership. Jeremy Grantham, GMO’s Co-Founder and Long-Term Investment Strategist, is renowned as an expert in identifying speculative investment bubbles and also as a leading climate investor and advocate.

GMO is privately owned and employs over 430 people worldwide. We are headquartered in Boston, with additional offices in Europe, Asia and Australia. Our company-wide culture emphasizes commitment to clients, intellectual curiosity, and open debate. We celebrate and respect our differences, while embracing and valuing what each of us brings to work, as we know that diverse teams in an inclusive, caring environment achieve higher engagement and better client results.

Please follow the prompts included in this job posting to apply. The application window for this role is anticipated to remain open until the job is filled, or as otherwise determined by GMO.

Position Description :

GMO is seeking a quantitative researcher to join our Systematic Equity Team. The candidate will work closely with researchers and portfolio managers to support the team’s rigorous research agenda. The team’s research process is structured to analyze significant amounts of historic, current, and projected financial characteristics as well as detailed macroeconomic data. This individual will work closely with other members of the team on various research and investment related topics.  This will include model-building, data cleaning, portfolio analysis and integration with all available GMO data sources. This position is located in our Boston office with the opportunity to work a hybrid schedule.

Responsibilities :

  • Work closely with team members to develop and to support investment research projects.
  • Enhance and expand our processes by conducting deep research on targeted projects using state-of-the-art modeling techniques.
  • Develop creative investment ideas independently and articulate why those ideas fit into our process.
  • Conduct in-depth financial accounting and capital markets research to support equity investment strategies.
  • Develop and implement quantitative models using a variety of valuation techniques, such as dividend discount models and free cash-flow models.
  • Design and implement solutions to make a positive impact on the investment research and analysis environment, and to increase efficiency, depth, breadth, and throughput of quantitative research capabilities.
  • Enhance both our bottom-up and top-down valuation models used for identifying investment opportunities.
  • Work closely with colleagues in Technology, Investment Data Solutions and across other investment teams to enhance existing databases and quantitative processes.
  • Support portfolio managers with ad-hoc research requests.
  • Provide support for portfolio construction and management activities.
  • Participate in periodic portfolio rebalancing.
  • Monitor portfolio positions and risk exposures and work with the execution team on trading strategies and analysis.

Required Skills and Characteristics :

  • The ideal candidate will have 5-8+ years of relevant experience in quantitative investing.
  • An advanced degree in accounting, Ph.D. preferred.
  • Strong understanding of financial accounting principles and practices.
  • Deep knowledge of modern valuation techniques, including dividend discount models and free cash-flow models.
  • Proficiency in Python for quantitative analysis and model development.
  • The ideal candidate will have demonstrated the ability to :
  • Work independently or collaboratively as part of a team, with a strong work ethic and sense of ownership.
  • Form actionable plans for solutions.
  • Generate functional, efficient software and documentation.
  • Work in source control and advance a shared code base.
  • Effectively manage multiple projects with strong prioritization skills.
  • Learn technical skills in new domains quickly.
  • Show a passion for applied research and technology.
  • This person should have the ability to develop creative investment ideas on their own and clearly articulate the ideas.
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills are important and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide array of investment and technology professionals is critical.
  • This is a reasonable, good faith estimate of the current salary range for this role. GMO’s salary range accounts for a wide array of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets and market demand for skills; level of experience and training; specific qualifications, performance, time in role / company, geographic location, and other business and organizational needs.

In addition, this position is eligible for a discretionary annual bonus award, which award may be determined by individual, team, department and firm performance, and is subject to the terms of GMO’s compensation plan. This position is also benefits eligible. GMO’s comprehensive benefits program includes medical insurance, dental insurance, life insurance, long-term disability coverage, a 401(k) / profit-sharing retirement plan, open paid time off, leaves of absences, dependent care resources, tuition reimbursement, charitable gifts matching, flexible spending accounts, and commuter benefits.
