Job Description

About the role:

As the Head of Critical Utilities, you are responsible for ensuring the safe, compliant, and uninterrupted delivery of utilities to our 24/7 commercial GMP biologics manufacturing operations. Success is achieved by leading a team of engineers and technicians in the operation, maintenance, repair, and improvement of GMP utility systems, including facility systems (e.g., HVAC, electrical), high-purity water systems (e.g., WFI, purified water), and general utilities (e.g., chilled water, plant steam). The position requires establishing and executing a vision that prioritizes safety, quality, and continuous improvement. You will report into the Head of Engineering.

How you will contribute:

  • Establish priorities that align with the plant's current deliverables and corporate objectives by anticipating industry standards and leveraging emerging technologies
  • Ensure continuous reliable uninterrupted service for critical systems that support a 24/7 manufacturing operation
  • Identify opportunities to utilize the critical systems in a more efficient manner to improve reliability and reduce operating costs
  • Ensure efficient workflow and documentation of preventive maintenance (PMs) and work orders (WOs) and justify the need for additional resources or external support when necessary
  • Implement reliability centered maintenance programs and conduct life cycle analysis for all critical systems
  • Serve as the engineering lead for sustainability, supporting the identification and implementation of energy improvement projects across the campus, while tracking and reporting progress toward sustainability goals
  • Partner with Project Engineering and Project Managers to ensure the smooth transition of Projects into day-to-day operations
  • Create and maintain an environment where team members experience personal and professional growth and drive towards becoming a high performing team
  • Coach, develop and provide feedback to drive individual and team performance
  • Oversee recruitment, training, and plan for future talent needs
  • Develop and align an engineering site vision that supports the organization's contribution to the Biologics OpU goal
  • Optimize the use of internal and external resources to achieve business objectives
  • Manage the budget, approve expenditures, issue purchase orders, and forecast expenses
  • Submit capital requests to support equipment replacements, upgrades, and other improvement projects as needed
  • Leverage extensive knowledge and experience in cross-functional team environments to coordinate and lead multiple engineering teams and individual contributors, ensuring plant objectives are met while preparing for future expansion
  • Ensure a safe work environment by adhering to safety guidelines and policies and enforcing compliance with California state, regulatory, and federal EPA regulations
  • Oversee the repair, maintenance, and operation of regulated systems in accordance with the requirements of relevant agencies

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering required
  • Minimum 10 years of related experience. Experience in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology or other FDA-regulated industry strongly preferred
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in leadership, supervisory or managerial role.
