Overview

Senior Director, Strategy to Order Process & Digitization Center of Excellence at Vertex Pharmaceuticals. The role leads the strategic sourcing function with a focus on end-to-end Strategy to Pay processes, digitization, data analytics, and cross-functional partnership to drive value beyond savings.

General Summary

As a key strategic leader in Strategic Sourcing, the Senior Director is responsible for enabling value delivery through optimized end-to-end processes, driving a digital and systems strategy, and enabling capabilities with a focus on digitization. The role generates data, insights and analytics to drive decision-making across Strategic Sourcing and the broader accounting organization.

Key Duties And Responsibilities

  • Lead the strategy, design, digitization, implementation, and continuous improvement of global strategic sourcing and procurement-to-order end-to-end processes (in partnership with the P2P team) to enhance value and impact on business objectives.
  • Develop and execute a multi-year digital process and technology roadmap for P2P, evaluating, implementing and optimizing technologies to enhance automation, data-driven decision-making, and user experience; align with evolving business needs.
  • Enable cross-functional sourcing teams to develop and evolve multi-year category strategies and sourcing plans that flow through the end-to-end procurement process; manage supplier relationships and performance; position the function as a strategic business partner.
  • Own capability development for Sourcing & Procurement, focusing on soft skills (partnering, influence, enterprise thinking, communication), business skills, and hard sourcing skills.
  • Manage end-to-end strategy-to-pay processes and tools (Market Intelligence, RFXs, Contracting, TPRM) to ensure effectiveness and efficiency; ensure adoption by team members.
  • Define and operationalize buying channels and supplier onboarding to support category strategies and sourcing outcomes; enable streamlined processes and user experience.
  • Develop Supplier Performance / Relationship Management processes, monitor supplier performance, manage risk, and mentor teams to ensure successful execution with strategic suppliers.
  • Develop and implement a robust Sustainability program and Supplier Diversity initiatives aligned with ID&E goals.
  • Lead Data, Insights and Analytics strategy to support end-to-end Strategy to Pay, enabling data-driven insights and decision-making across teams.
  • Collaborate to develop value delivery plans and metrics aligned to business objectives, including value beyond savings and annual cost savings targets, with Business Partners and Finance.
  • Develop and enforce policies to ensure global regulatory and SOP compliance; regularly assess gaps and opportunities for improvement.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to optimize strategy-to-pay processes through integration, simplified user experience, streamlined workflows, and reduced cycle times.
  • Drive initiatives that enhance strategic value of sourcing and procurement within the organization, in alignment with P2P.
  • Define KPIs for strategic sourcing and procurement and monitor performance.
  • Develop training programs and tools to elevate capabilities and enable business impact.
  • Drive change and adoption of processes, tools, and technologies to deliver value; foster a culture of continuous learning.

Knowledge And Skills

  • Experience building and driving strategy with multi-year digital roadmaps in partnership with Strategic Sourcing and DTE.
  • Ability to establish and maintain high-level business partner relationships, think strategically, and communicate persuasively.
  • Understanding of Category Management and sourcing, data analysis, P2P tools and processes, supplier performance management, and stakeholder management.
  • Ability to develop team members, provide constructive feedback, and make difficult decisions when necessary.
  • Leads by example with aggressive yet supported goals and strong execution capability.
  • Strong project management and ability to lead cross-functional, global teams; collaboration across Legal, Compliance, Finance, and other functions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; comfortable presenting to executives.
  • Understanding of the pharmaceutical / biotech regulatory environment and Vertex’s strategic direction and imperatives.
  • Proven ability to balance strategic vision with operational delivery.
  • Education And Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline.
  • 12–14 years of Strategic Sourcing experience, including several within pharma / biotech, with 7+ years of supervisory experience.
  • Preferred : Advanced degree (MBA) and / or supply chain professional designation; international assignments a plus.
  • Pay Range

    $214,400 - $321,600

    Disclosure Statement

    The base salary range is a reasonable estimate at the time of posting and may be complemented by bonuses and equity. Actual base salary will depend on skills, experience, and other factors. Vertex offers total rewards including comprehensive benefits and programs.

    Flex Eligibility Status

    In this Hybrid-Eligible role, you can be designated as Hybrid (remote up to two days / week) or On-Site (five days / week on-site with ad hoc flexibility). Note : Flex status is subject to Vertex policy and may change.
