Job Title: Chief Clinical Officer

Location: Office – Hybrid, North Liberty, Iowa or Altoona, Iowa

Exemption Status: Salary, Exempt

Schedule: 8 am – 5 pm, Monday to Friday plus limited administrative call

Compensation: $190,000 - $227,900 annually

*Iowa Donor Network determines final compensation based on education, experience, and skills relevant to the position.

We facilitate the recovery of organs, tissues, and corneas in Iowa. We honor donors and support donor families at the time of donation and on a continuing basis.

Position Summary:

Responsible to oversee and guide the clinical work systems. This includes donor eligibility, authorization, organ and tissue recovery, organ utilization, and donor restoration. The incumbent provides ongoing leadership and guidance to the directors of these work systems while instilling a sense of efficient, cost-effective delivery of mission-based services. Additionally, the incumbent aligns daily activities with the strategic and operational goals of the organization consistent with industry standards and best practices.

Essential Functions and Performance Responsibilities:
  • Supervise the selection, training, development, and performance of assigned work system directors to retain a motivated professional workforce for IDN.
  • Establish and communicate job responsibilities, manage performance expectations and outcomes to maintain optimal operational performance.
  • Ensure compliance with AATB, FDA, CMS, HRSA, OPTN, OSHA, IDPH, federal and state employment and other regulations, and IDN policies through annual reviews, department audit compliance, and staying current on industry standards and regulations.
  • Respond to external policy compliance inquiries such as OPTN patient safety reports and CMS regulatory deficiencies.
  • Oversee the overall operational, budgetary, and financial responsibilities and activities of the work systems.
  • Participate in organizational strategic planning and assist with development of work system specific action plans to meet organizational goals.
  • Accomplish work system performance, strategies and goals through monitoring and analyzing data to maximize organ and tissue donation. Identify trends and areas for organizational improvement.
  • Oversee/guide organ, and tissue authorization, donation, and directors to maximize performance in organ and tissue recovery activity.
  • Make recommendations to Directors for organizational staffing as indicated by changes in activity and staffing capacity data.
  • Coach leadership team members through achievement of strategic planning action plans, staff engagement, performance and progressive disciplinary process and other employment issues.
  • Conduct regular meetings with assigned directors.
  • Ensure implementation of organizational strategic action plans.
  • Ensure positive relationships between key stakeholders and IDN.
  • Develop agenda and facilitate semi-annual meetings of the Medical Advisory Committee.
  • Ensure periodic individual meetings with transplant center, donor hospital, medical examiner and other community stakeholders.
  • Provide information and interact with the Board of Directors and Medical Advisory Committee to maintain a high level of service and support.
  • With the CEO, develop and implement strategies to respond to changing conditions and new opportunities for the organization. Monitor and analyze data to maximize organizational performance.
Position Qualifications and Education Requirements:

Active clinical licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN), Advanced Practice Nurse (APN), Physician Assistant (PA) or equivalent senior clinical credential required. A bachelor's degree required, master’s or other advanced degrees and professional certifications highly valued. Extensive leadership experience in critical care, including a minimum of 5 years at the director level or above required and experience in clinical administration or healthcare leadership preferred. Professional experience in the organ and tissue donation field preferred.

Proactively assesses priorities, structures work, and delegates with intention to drive accountability and optimize performance. Makes sound, timely decisions and implements practical solutions with a strong sense of urgency. Exercises disciplined financial stewardship, managing departmental budgets with accuracy and strategic insight while maintaining strong attention to detail.

Physical Requirements:
  • Must receive required vaccines based on outlined schedules to protect our employees, healthcare personnel, donors, recipients, and families we may come into contact. (e.g., Influenza obtained annually by December 1st
  • Requires travel between office locations and the ability to work evenings or weekends.
  • Lift equipment and supplies weighing up to 20 lbs.
  • Possible mental and visual fatigue associated with detailed work.
  • Express ideas verbally and convey detailed or important spoken information.
  • Receive detailed information through oral and auditory communication.
  • Maintain availability for communication 24/7/365.
