Description

The Mammography Inspector is responsible for conducting compliance surveys of mammography facilities in accordance with the FDA’s Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA). Additional responsibilities include performing compliance inspections and testing of diagnostic and fluoroscopic X-ray facilities; investigating incidents and allegations involving Xray equipment and facilities; reviewing facility Shielding Design plans; and evaluating registration materials through the Environmental Health online licensing system.

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • Administers technical activities related to mammography licensing by coordinating and conducting field investigations of installations utilizing all types of radiation sources.

  • Conducts MQSA compliance inspections of mammography facilities, including evaluating equipment performance, reviewing quality assurance records, verifying staff qualifications, and documenting findings in accordance with federal standards.

  • Prepares and submits written reports, investigative materials, and procedural documentation to determine the causes of radiation accidents or incidents, in accordance with the State and FDA Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA).

  • Performs compliance inspections and investigations in relation to Department of Public Health regulations, including conducting technical measurements and evaluations of diagnostic X-ray equipment.

  • Travels statewide as required to conduct inspections, investigations, and fieldwork; no specific geographic territory is assigned based on the inspector’s home location.

  • Serves as a member of the Commonwealth’s Nuclear Incident Advisory Team (NIAT) and performs emergency response activities during radiation-related accidents or incidents.

  • Provides technical recommendations on mammography systems, including matters related to filtration, collimation, and target-to-image receptor distance, and evaluates their impact on controlled and uncontrolled areas with respect to radiation exposure for occupational personnel and public protection.

  • Prepare written inspection reports assessing compliance with Department rules and regulations governing radiation hazard control for review by senior staff.

  • Reviews Shielding Design Plans for facilities utilizing radiation sources to ensure compliance with applicable Department and NRCP regulations.

  • Utilizes radiation survey instruments to conduct measurements and assessments in the fields.

  • Obtains and maintains inspector certification in accordance with the FDA Mammography Quality Standards Act.

  • Performs e-licensing duties to support the registration and licensing of ionizing radiation users and facilities.

  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the Director of the Division of Radiation Control (DRC).

Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the terminology and standard abbreviations used in environmental/sanitary engineering.

  • Knowledge of the engineering properties of soils, including the compressibility and shear strength of soils.

  • Knowledge of the methods of soil testing, including soil classification and triaxial strength tests.

  • Knowledge of the methods used in the preparation of charts, graphs and tables.

  • Ability to analyze and determine the applicability of environmental/sanitary engineering data, to draw conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as plans, specifications, blueprints, drawings, etc.

  • Ability to understand and apply laws, rules and regulations concerning the environment in connection with the construction and maintenance of pollution control facilities and equipment.

  • Ability to understand, apply and explain the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, specifications and guidelines governing assigned unit activities.

  • Capacity to operate instruments and equipment used to measure environmental conditions.

  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations using formulas to solve environmental/sanitary engineering problems.

  • Ability to prepare technical and general reports.

  • Capacity to maintain accurate records.

  • Ability to write concisely, express thoughts clearly and to develop ideas in a logical sequence.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience as a Radiological Technologist

  • Certification as an FDA mammography inspector

  • Microsoft Office Suite

  • Valid Massachusetts Driver’s License

  • Access to reliable transportation for work related travel

Working Conditions:

  • General office working conditions may include transporting up to 25 lbs.

  • In state travel up to 50% of the time and some overnight travel is required to support in state MA inspections

  • Out-of-state travel to support training may be required up to 2 weeks.
