About the role

Crunchyroll is growing and changing, presenting unique challenges and opportunities to support millions of anime fans around the world. The Data Engineering team provides seamless help to our internal stakeholders, ensuring an exceptional experience for all Crunchyroll fans.

As a Senior Database Engineer for the Data Engineering team, you will maintain and enhance the reliability of our data infrastructure. Your work will directly impact the availability and performance of our data services, enabling the organization to make data‑driven decisions. You will collaborate with data engineers and software engineers to develop and drive 100 % automation and best practices for deep monitoring and alerting.

In the role of Senior Database Engineer, you will report to the Director of Data Engineering and will work from either Los Angeles, CA or San Francisco, CA.

About You

• You have a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
• You have 8+ years of experience in site reliability engineering, database operations, or a related role with a focus on data platforms, data stores, and data operations.
• You have experience with the AWS cloud platform and its data‑related services.
• You are proficient in monitoring tools (e.g., Datadog, CloudWatch, DevOps Guru, DB Performance Insights).
• You are proficient in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, Java).
• You have a strong understanding of various performance metrics both at a high level and at a low level like disk / IO saturation.
• You have experience in identifying and eliminating bottlenecks in the system.
• You have a strong understanding of database internals such as index types, schemas, and query plans.
• You have a strong understanding of database systems (SQL, NoSQL) and experience managing large‑scale data infrastructures.
• You have basic knowledge of automation frameworks (e.g., Terraform, Cloud Formation).
• You have basic knowledge of CI / CD pipelines and DataOps practices.
• You have experience with data governance, compliance, and lifecycle management.
• You have strong problem‑solving skills and a proactive approach to identifying and addressing issues.
• You can work independently, own projects, and collaborate effectively with the team to shape the vision of the data engineering organization.
• You have strong communication skills and can mentor and guide junior engineers.

About the Team

The Database Engineering team ensures the reliability, scalability, and performance of our data infrastructure. We focus on standardizing and implementing monitoring and alerting across all datastores, keeping databases up‑to‑date, and automating key processes to enhance operational efficiency. We lead efforts to keep databases high‑availability, automate monitoring and compliance, and continuously improve load testing and data governance practices.

The Pay Range for this position is listed. Actual pay will vary based on location, experience, and performance. The range listed is one component of Crunchyroll’s Total Rewards and may include bonuses, retirement savings, time‑off, and other benefits.
