Position Summary

The Safety and Stabilization Counselor plays a critical role in promoting the safety, wellbeing, and stability of clients enrolled in Recuperative Care programs. This position provides direct support to residents by fostering a secure and supportive environment, ensuring basic needs are met, and addressing safety concerns as they arise. In addition to supporting physical safety, the counselor offers immediate assistance to individuals experiencing acute emotional, mental, or situational crises through trauma-informed crisis intervention, assessment, and short-term stabilization planning. The role requires close collaboration with the care teamincluding case managers, medical staff, and community partnersto stabilize and support clients recovering from illness, injury, or trauma while promoting dignity, empowerment, and trust.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Client Engagement & Support

  • Engage with clients to build rapport and provide compassionate, trauma-informed emotional support.
  • Establish positive and empathetic relationships with clients and encourage open communication.
  • Promote inclusiveness, cultural responsiveness, and respect when interacting with diverse populations.

Daily Living & Basic Needs Assistance

  • Assist clients with daily living activities including hygiene, mobility support, meal preparation, and cleanup.
  • Ensure basic needs are met, including access to food, clothing, and personal hygiene supplies.
  • Safety Monitoring & Crisis Response

  • Monitor the facility environment to identify and address safety risks; conduct regular safety inspections and enforce facility rules.
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment by monitoring access points and responding promptly to safety concerns.
  • Use non-violent crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques when responding to tense situations or emergencies.
  • Collaborate with administrative staff, emergency services, and law enforcement when addressing escalated safety or medical incidents.
  • Case Coordination & Team Collaboration

  • Support implementation of individualized care plans in collaboration with case managers, clinicians, and support staff.
  • Participate in team huddles, case conferences, and interdisciplinary planning meetings to ensure client needs are addressed holistically.
  • Community Integration & Resource Access

  • Assist clients in accessing essential services such as medical care, behavioral health, housing assistance, transportation, job readiness, and education programs.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of available community resources and assist with referrals and coordination.
  • Compliance & Professionalism

  • Uphold confidentiality standards and ensure all documentation (client notes, incident reports, logs) is timely, accurate, and compliant with WPCC policies and regulations.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, dependability, and cultural humility in all interactions with clients, staff, and community partners.
  • Qualifications and Requirements

    Education

  • High School Diploma or GED (required)
  • Bachelors degree in social work, psychology, or related field (preferred)
  • Experience

  • Minimum 1 year of experience in a similar setting (e.g., shelter, healthcare, or residential care)
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention, safety protocols, and de-escalation strategies
  • Experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness, behavioral health challenges, or trauma
  • Certifications or Licenses

  • California Guard Card or Proprietary Private Security Officer (PSO) registration (Required at time of hire)
  • BLS Certification(Required)
  • Bilingual in English / Spanish (preferred)

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Awareness of confidentiality requirements and compliance standards
  • Basic computer literacy, including familiarity with Microsoft Office and electronic health records (EHR) systems
  • Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to walk facility grounds regularly and assist clients physically when needed
  • May involve long periods of standing and occasional lifting (up to 25 lbs.)
  • Work is performed on-site at the shelter facility; safety and PPE protocols must be followed
  • Schedule and Travel Requirements

  • Full-time (40 hours / week)
  • Shift schedules may vary, including evening, overnight, and weekend availability
  • May require occasional travel to WPCC partner sites in Long Beach or surrounding areas
