Overview
The role
This position is responsible for the management of the Laboratory Operations at the Cincinnati, OH location, which provides environmental analytical testing services to environmental consultants, industry and government.
Responsibilities include overseeing the day-to-day operations of the laboratory. Accountability includes maintaining instruments in good working order, managing analytical staff, meeting due dates, and meeting all requirements described in ALS data integrity, ethics and technical SOP's. As a senior manager at the laboratory, this is a key position which sometimes requires work outside of "regular hours" on tasks such as instrument repair or troubleshooting.
Specific Responsibilities :
- Manage production for the laboratory. As a customer-facing business, the laboratory produces analytical reports on a daily basis. The Operations Manager helps ensure that analytical testing is completed in an orderly and timely manner to meet due dates and commitments.

- Help staff minimize errors and rework
- Help laboratory director plan for and manage sample volume increases, new equipment, staff increases, etc.
- Prepare capital equipment proposals (CEPs) as requested by Laboratory Director
- Ensure the laboratory is suitably equipped, staffed and using approved methodologies to provide quality service to clients
- Ensure staff members are appropriately trained and have the knowledge and skills to perform their roles competently
- Continually assess the laboratory to increase productivity and efficiency through equipment upgrading, method enhancements or implementation of new technology within the laboratory. This will include optimizing staff numbers, cross training staff and minimizing maintenance costs.
- Authorize the purchase of consumable inventory for each department
- Actively engage with the Management team to share ideas for continuous improvement in the region.
- Work with and assist the Client Services group with report status updates, client inquiries, data checks, etc.
- Keep up to date on the changes and needs of our target markets
- Ensure that appropriate occupational health & safety practices and corporate compliance initiatives are being followed within the laboratory
- Responsible for ensuring that the equipment and the environment at the location are appropriate to maintain a safe work environment.
- Develop and further improve the safety & sustainability culture within the business unit through strong leadership
- Foster a working environment that ensures quality policies are understood and followed
- Ensure that the quality of the analytical data produced meets or exceeds company and regulatory standards
- Ensure that laboratory staff adhere to the appropriate SOPs and principles of the system
- Assess the results of QA / QC audits and implement improvements as required
- Work with QA Manager to ensure root cause investigations are properly conducted and solutions are effective
- Other duties related to the successful operation and administration of the laboratory as requested by the Laboratory Director.
