Performs routine technical activities pertaining to the maintenance and repair of the city's irrigation systems. Work involves understanding all aspects of irrigation systems and related components and utilities, ensuring adherence to all applicable sanitary and safety regulations, and supervising and guiding the work of others. Participates in formal public presentations to a variety of audiences.
Work is performed under general supervision with moderate latitude in the use of initiative. Position exercises some independent judgment in accordance with defined policies, procedures, and techniques. Reports to Grounds Maintenance Supervisor or designee.

Oversees the installation, maintenance, and repairs to the city's irrigation systems; participates in all tasks related to maintaining and monitoring the city's irrigation system.
Performs daily inspections and preventative maintenance of the irrigation system; identifies safety and repair issues; adjusts and replaces heads and maintains controllers and valves; monitors and adjusts watering schedules.
Assists with development and coordination of a long-term replacement plan of the irrigation system.
Compiles records and submits reports on conditions of all irrigation systems to department administration.
Assists with researching, developing, and implementing a comprehensive city-wide water conservation plan and policies regarding water conservation at parks, facilities, golf courses, and landscaped medians; provides educational guidance to residents, commercial consumers, personnel, and golf courses.
Coordinates the implementation of water conservation policies with designated representatives; provides training on city water conservation policies to grounds maintenance personnel.
Makes presentations to Homeowner Associations (HOAs) and the public on water conservation methods regarding irrigation and domestic water.
Reviews work orders and schedules personnel and equipment in accordance with job requirements.
Manages inventory of parts, supplies, and equipment of all irrigation/control systems.
Trains personnel in safety, maintenance and operational procedures required by the city, OSHA, and other regulatory agencies.
Inspects completed work of irrigation contractors to determine quality control, completeness of work and adherence to contract requirements. Also, reviews applicable invoices and payment applications for accuracy and for further review and approval.
Maintains, prepares, and references numerous files, records, reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, diagrams, geographic information system (GIs), and as-builts.
Adheres to all safety and housekeeping/public health standards established by the City and various regulatory agencies; ensures standards are not violated.
Maintains quality communication and interaction with all City employees, representatives from external organizations, and the public to maintain good will toward the city and to project a good City image.
Demonstrates behaviors that support the City's Vision and Values.
Maintains on-call work availability as assigned, to prepare for, respond to, or recover from a hurricane, tropical weather event, or other emergency to meet the city's obligation to remain operational before, during, and after the event; duties assigned may or may not be typical of the job and are contingent upon the needs of the city and the residents because of the event.
Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with those interacted with during work regardless of race, color, religious creed, national origin, ancestry, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, genetic information, disability, political affiliation, military service, or diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Schedules, trains, and works with staff to correct deficiencies.
Pay and Bargaining Status
This is a non-exempt position pursuant to the Fair Labor Standards Act and is within the blue collar bargaining unit covered by the City of Tamarac and Federation of Public Employees (FPE) collective bargaining agreement. This position is paid on an hourly basis, issued bi-weekly, and subject to overtime pay in accordance with the terms of the current City of Tamarac and FPE collective bargaining agreement.
Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED required; supplemented by two (2) years of experience installing, maintaining, repairing, and controlling complex irrigation systems and underground utility systems; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience.
Required Certifications and Licenses
Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver License and the ability to drive a city owned vehicle per established policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
National Incident Management System (NIMS) training will be required (and sponsored) according to job duties and responsibilities.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Experience in training others regarding all aspects of irrigation systems and / or with implementing and communicating water conservation programs is preferred.
