Job Title : ELA Special Education Teacher
Location : Washington, DC 20019
Employment Type : Full-Time
Compensation : $55 per hour
Certification Required : Valid DC Teaching License in Special Education

We are seeking a passionate and experienced ELA Special Education Teacher to join our team for the upcoming school year. This role is specifically for serving students with special needs in a dedicated classroom environment. If you have a strong background in ELA instruction, are skilled in supporting diverse learners, and are confident in developing IEPs aligned to literacy needs, this is an excellent opportunity to make a meaningful impact in a supportive school environment.
What You’ll Do
As an ELA Special Education Teacher, you’ll be responsible for delivering high-quality literacy instruction and supporting students’ reading and writing development. You will :
Instruction & Student Support
IEP Development & Case Management
Draft IEPs that include ELA-focused academic goals, accommodations, and literacy supports
Conduct ELA-related academic assessments and prepare clear, data-driven reports
Collaborate with related service providers (OT, SLP, etc.) to ensure literacy needs are accurately reflected in the IEP
Ensure all instructional components of the IEP are accurate, aligned to student needs, and submitted on time
Participate in IEP meetings to present assessment findings and proposed literacy goals
Communication & Collaboration
Maintain regular communication with families, including monthly check-ins
Liaise with general education teachers and service providers to track student progress
Provide consultation and professional guidance on accommodations and modifications
Documentation & Compliance
Maintain up-to-date service logs, contact logs, and student data
Draft and submit Prior Written Notices, Assessment Plans, ITPs, and other required documents
Track IEP timelines and ensure timely delivery of all services and reports
Submit reports to families and collect all necessary signatures

Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree (Required)
Valid DC Special Education Teaching Certification (Required)
Experience writing and managing IEPs
Availability to teach in a self-contained ELA classroom
Preferred Qualifications
Two or more years of teaching experience in a high-need, high-performing school
Demonstrated impact on student growth and achievement
Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills
Familiarity with DC compliance timelines and special education procedures
Compliance with DC’s COVID-19 vaccine mandatory
