General Description:

The Workforce Development unit at the Community College of Philadelphia seeks Instructors with experience teaching foundational manufacturing skills, including machining- and welding-related mathematics, measurement, safety, tools, and workplace readiness. Ideal candidates will bring strong industry experience and a commitment to delivering engaging, hands-on, career-aligned training.
This course introduces students to the evolution of manufacturing, technical math for machining and welding, engineering drawings, material classification, tool usage, OSHA safety standards, and career exploration in the skilled trades. Classes may be offered during daytime and/or evening hours at the Community College of Philadelphia. Workforce Development provides noncredit education to businesses, organizations, and individuals wishing to enhance their skills and meet professional goals, offering high-quality continuing education and training programs delivered by expert faculty and staff.

Teaching faculty are an integral part of the larger Academic and Student Success Division at CCP including Workforce Development or Career Training. The Academic and Student Success Division is a community of learners committed to student success as demonstrated through equitable and measurable outcomes, innovative practices, relevant curriculum, quality learning, and a rewarding student experience. Specific Responsibilities:

  • Curriculum Development: Plan, develop, and revise curriculum for Manufacturing Fundamentals, ensuring alignment with industry expectations in machining, welding, and manufacturing technology.

  • Instruction: Teach adult learners technical math, measurement, blueprint interpretation, foundational manufacturing principles, and the use of hand and layout tools. Provide instruction that connects mathematical concepts directly to machining and welding tasks.

  • Industry Foundations: Introduce students to the evolution of manufacturing, major machine tools, materials classification, and workplace applications in machining and welding.

  • Career Exploration: Guide students in exploring manufacturing career pathways and developing individualized career goals. Facilitate engagement with industry professionals.

  • Documentation & Assessment: Maintain accurate records of student progress, skill competency, OSHA 10 certification requirements, and applied learning outcomes.

  • Technology Integration: Use appropriate instructional technology, including measurement tools, digital resources, and learning management systems, to support student learning.

  • Soft Skills Development: Support student growth in teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and other essential employability skills for manufacturing environments.

  • Inclusive Practices: Create an inclusive, accessible learning environment that supports students from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.

  • Student-Centered Learning: Use applied, hands-on instructional methods such as demonstrations, practice labs, simulations, and project-based learning.

  • Teaching Excellence: Model industry-relevant behaviors; maintain high standards for teaching, safety, and student success; and advocate for student learning and professional development.

  • Community Engagement: Participate in college-wide and Workforce Development events, including recruitment, student activities, and cross-functional initiatives. Help create experiential learning opportunities with industry partners.

  • Assessment & Continuous Improvement: Engage in assessment of student learning and use the results to refine course content, instructional methods, and program outcomes.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Minimum five (5) years of professional experience in an industrial environment or a closely related field required.

  • Possesses knowledge of tools, materials, measurements, and safety practices commonly used in manufacturing, construction, or skilled trades settings.

  • Demonstrated ability to teach or train adult learners in technical or applied subjects.

  • Strong understanding of technical math, blueprint reading, measurement, materials, and safety practices in manufacturing environments.

  • Familiarity with OSHA safety principles and the ability to support OSHA 10 certification instruction.

  • Strong communication and facilitation skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior teaching or workforce training experience.

  • Industry certifications such as OSHA Trainer, NIMS, AWS, or related manufacturing credentials.

  • Experience with hand tools, layout tools, and basic shop practices common to manufacturing, construction, or fabrication environments.

  • Industry exposure to materials properties, tool usage, and foundational technical math applicable to machining, welding, or construction tasks.
