POSITION TITLE : Grounds and Facilities Assistant

Reports to : Grounds and Facilities Manager

PURPOSE OF POSITION

The purpose of this position is to perform semi-skilled / skilled manual work involving the cleaning and maintenance of buildings, equipment, grounds, and related facilities.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

The following duties are typical for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this position. Other duties may be required and assigned by the supervisor.

Maintain Facilities and Grounds : Perform general cleaning and upkeep of buildings, equipment, and grounds. This includes a range of tasks from janitorial duties to painting projects and general building / equipment repair.

Execute Janitorial Tasks : Responsibilities include cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, vacuuming and mopping floors, washing windows and walls, cleaning fixtures and woodwork, replenishing supplies, and emptying trash.

Conduct Basic Carpentry and Construction : Construct, alter, or repair floors, roofs, stairways, ceilings, partitions, doors, windows, and screens. Assist with hanging doors, applying siding, assembling items, and moving furniture.

Perform Painting Duties : Prepare and sand surfaces, pressure wash, and apply paint or stain using brushes or sprayers. This also involves moving and rearranging furniture as needed.

Support General Operations : Execute various manual tasks such as setting and removing rodent traps, safely climbing ladders, lifting and moving heavy materials, and transporting recyclable items to appropriate facilities.

Operate Equipment and Tools : Proficiently operate a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools, including motor vehicles, mowers, edgers, blowers, chainsaws, and various carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, and mechanic tools.

Mechanical / Electrical / Plumbing : Basic troubleshooting and repair of MEP systems and determination of whether internal or outsourced resources may be utilized for repairs.

Prioritize Safety : Adhere to all safety procedures, utilize appropriate safety equipment, and actively monitor the work environment to ensure the safety of all employees and individuals present.

Communicate Effectively : Interact and communicate with supervisors, colleagues, other departments, NPS personnel, contractors, visitors, and external agencies to discuss work status, exchange information, and resolve issues.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

May perform laundry duties, such as washing clothes / linens in washing machines, transferring washed clothes to dryers, or folding / storing clean laundry.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION : Candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED. A minimum of one (1) year of prior experience in housekeeping, janitorial work, building maintenance, grounds maintenance, or equipment maintenance is required. Experience within a camp setting is preferred. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position will also be considered.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS : Requires the ability to actively listen, articulate thoughts clearly and effectively, and convey information through both verbal and nonverbal means. The ability to calculate and / or tabulate data is also necessary.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND SAFETY : Demonstrated adherence to environmental policies concerning discharges, emissions, and exposure is required to ensure a safe and compliant operational environment.

EQUIPMENT, MACHINERY, TOOLS, AND MATERIALS UTILIZATION : Possesses the ability to competently operate and control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and / or materials, requiring complex and rapid adjustments as needed.

SAFETY : Demonstrates the capacity to monitor and consistently model safe work habits, fostering a secure working environment.

TEAMWORK : Exhibits the ability to communicate effectively, support, and cooperate with colleagues to achieve organizational objectives.

Environmental Factors : Performance of essential functions may involve exposure to various adverse environmental conditions, including, but not limited to, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature extremes, noise, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright / dim light, toxic agents, disease, or pathogenic substances.

Physical Ability : Tasks necessitate the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work. This typically involves a combination of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. It generally requires the lifting, carrying, pushing, and / or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials, ranging from 20 to 50 pounds.

Vehicle Utilization : Requires possession and maintenance of a valid Tennessee driver’s license, ability to operate a manual transmission is preferred.
