The Hired Guns are seeking a digitally-minded and innovative Opinion Editor to launch and develop the opinion section for a budding, well-financed media organization based in San Francisco.

Salary range: $150,000 to $170,000 per year

This growing media organization has an established audience and is actively building out new verticals. And that’s where you come in:

As the Opinion Editor of this brand-new section, you will have an incredible opportunity to develop an innovative and dynamic editorial voice that will live across multiple mediums and platforms, from traditional text to video, to social media, to in-person events and more. You will be responsible for curating a diverse range of viewpoints, keeping abreast of current events and trends locally and nationally. In short, your mission – should you choose to accept it – is to create a respectful, engaging, and trailblazing platform where thought-provoking opinions live across a range of local and national topics.

How you’ll know if you’re a fit…

The ideal candidate has a deep understanding of key issues and trends in San Francisco and the Bay Area, a keen eye for compelling writing and emerging trends in the media landscape, and a knack for recruiting dynamic and high-profile authors. You must possess exceptional editorial skills, a creative spirit, and a proven track record (at least 10 years) of working effectively with a wide variety of writers in a deadline-driven environment. You must be able to bring your rolodex with you and access opinions from both sides of the table. Familiarity with digital publishing platforms, email newsletters, audience engagement best practices and social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and more are a must.
