Portland, Oregon Freestanding Birth Center - Per Diem/Part Time/Locums CNM
Alma Midwifery Services in Portland, OR has a position open for a Certified Nurse Midwife to cover an upcoming parental leave in our shared-call practice with the option of continuing in a part- or full-time capacity thereafter.Â
Join our team of CNMs, CPMs, and RNs in our combined freestanding birth center, clinic, and home birth practice! Current Oregon CNM license is preferred, but we are looking at all qualified applicants.
About Alma Midwifery:
- CABC-accredited mid-volume birth center: 4 birthing suites where we serve 12-16 birthing families per month. A PDX 'Parentâ€s Choice' birth center! We are a team oriented and supportive group; dedicated to evidenced based perinatal care for a low risk population.
- Slow-paced clinic days (9-6 or 10-7): Midwives spend an hour with each client for prenatal care. On average, midwives see only eight clients per day. This type of care allows you to build a relationship with the people we serve.
- Overall on-call system is two tiered: 1st call and 2nd call -- First call shifts include phone and triage, reviewing/tracking labs, answering client portal messages; some shifts include attending births.
- Alma has the technology, medical equipment and medications expected of an evidence-based CABC-accredited birth center including: NST, ultrasound, anti-hemorrhagic medications, IV fluids and antibiotics, nitrous oxide, equipment and meds for the full NRP algorithm, CCHD screening, ClientCare EHR program, Up-to-date subscription, journal access, etc.
- Alma Midwifery has clear protocols and a robust Continuous Quality Improvement program, which facilitates routine emergency and skills drills and educational inservices.
About This Position:
- Clinic = Every other week on Tue/Wed/Thurs (on week off-call). Hour-long prenatal visits!
- Call = 7 day stretch on week opposite to clinic. LOW-volume practice so you'll attend anywhere 0-4 births per call week (average 1-2)
- Healthy, low-risk clientele
- Health insurance may be covered after 60 days
- Midwife will be on call to care for the client in the birth center and home setting from active labor admission through early postpartum stability (2-4 hrs postpartum) and will not be responsible for discharging client/newborn. Will have another experienced assist midwife present for birth and immediate postpartum
- Births are attended by midwife and an RN assist. Often, a student midwife will also attend as Alma is also an educational center

Qualifications:
- Preferably at least 2 years experience working as a Certified Nurse Midwife, preferably in community birth (home or birth center), but we will consider other strong candidates.
- If not direct experience with community birth, all applicants must have a deep philosophical understanding and trust in physiological birth
- Up-to-date NRP and BLS (or ability to obtain ASAP)
- Desire to work in a small group independent practiceÂ
- Compatibility with an on-call schedule
- Keen clinical skills: well-gyn care, pre- and postnatal care, and well-baby care up to 6 weeks of age
- Excellent trauma informed communication skills with deep listening ability and understanding of informed consent and shared decision-making
- Ability to chart using EHR and working knowledge of best charting practices
