Job Summary
A National Transit is seeking a skilled and dependable Fleet Mechanic to support the safe and reliable operation of our transit fleet. This role is critical to ensuring vehicles are properly maintained, inspected, and ready for daily service. The ideal candidate has hands-on mechanical experience, strong diagnostic skills, and a commitment to safety and quality workmanship.
This is an active, hands-on position working in a fast-paced maintenance environment supporting paratransit and transit operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform preventive maintenance (PMs), safety inspections, and annual maintenance inspections.
- Diagnose and repair vehicle and equipment issues, including engines, brakes, suspensions, drivetrains, transmissions, and electrical systems.
- Ensure vehicles are started, inspected, and ready for daily rollout.
- Complete work orders and maintenance documentation accurately and timely.
- Respond to road calls and assist with emergency repairs as needed.
- Enter and maintain maintenance records in FA Suites or similar systems.
- Review and address DVIR (Driver Vehicle Inspection Report) repairs.
- Track oil samples and monitor vehicle performance indicators.
- Communicate shop needs, parts requirements, and repair recommendations.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized garage and work area.
- Collaborate with lot attendants and operations staff to ensure vehicle readiness and compliance.
Required Qualifications
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Minimum of 2 years of hands-on vehicle maintenance experience in a shop environment.
- Ability to read and interpret safety documents, schematics, blueprints, and mechanical diagrams.
- Valid drivers license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to pass a DOT physical examination and drug screening.
- Strong attention to detail, safety awareness, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience maintaining heavy-duty or transit vehicles.
- ASE certification(s) preferred but not required.
- Strong electrical diagnostic and troubleshooting skills.
- Familiarity with DOT compliance standards and inspections.
