Basic Purpose :
The hands-on Controller will oversee all accounting functions of the organization, which may include, but are not limited to, ensuring monthly financial statements, account reconciliations, and commentary are completed in a timely manner, leading day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring sales and use tax, and business registrations are in compliance and filed on-time, partnering with external audits, managing financial processes, reporting, planning, and budgets, overseeing accounting staff, performing risk assessments, and assisting the CFO with corporate financial decisions. Responsible for ensuring all accounting tasks follow financial regulations and reporting requirements to keep the company in compliance.
Responsibilities :
Responsible for timely and accurate monthly financial close, financial statement preparation, and general ledger account reconciliations. Review and evaluate financial data for accuracy, consistency, and transparency.Supervise the accounting staff and balance workloads by taking on various tasks as needed.Provide timely and meaningful reporting with actionable insights and variance analysis to management regarding financial condition, risks and opportunities, and performance versus established metrics.File timely and accurate sales and franchise tax returns, and other business filings required by the governmentPartner with external auditors to provide needed information on a timely basis to ensure the efficient and timely completion of the annual audit.Improve efficiency and effectiveness through process, reporting, and / or automation.Partner with human resources on healthcare, payroll, and insurance.Build meaningful relationships across the company and participate as a member of management of the company in most decisions involving financial and accounting policies.Protect corporate assets, endowment, etc., by developing and implementing sound accounting policies and procedures.Optimize company resources through sound forecasting and cash management.Partner with Chief Financial Officer to prepare a timely and comprehensive annual budget package.Support Chief Financial Officer to successfully integrate accounting systems and functions.Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal government requirements.Assume direct responsibility for developing, implementing, and adhering to effective cost controls throughout the organization.Develop and administer programs, policies, and procedures concerning risk management and loss prevention to ensure the most effective methods of protecting the assets of the company.Serve as principal contact with outside organizations such as the IRS, CPA firms, and state auditors.Remain up to date on developments that could impact the company's operations or reporting requirements.Ensure continuing departmental effectiveness through the selection, training, development, and motivation of a competent accounting staff.Serve as primary back-up to accounting manager for payment processing and cash reconciliation.Other duties as assigned.Job Specifications :
Education : Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business, or another related field preferred.Experience : 10+ years of related accounting management and progressive leadership experience, ideally in eCommerce, retail, or manufacturing.Specialized Knowledge, Licenses, etc. : Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required. Strong understanding of GAAP and financial systems (ideally Sage). Proficient in sales and use tax compliance software (ideally Avalara).Specific Skills : Well-developed collaboration and coaching skills. Demonstrated ability to plan, execute, and lead projects. The ability to operate on both strategic and tactical levels. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. The ability to use data to drive effective business decisions. An internal and external customer focus. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to give compelling presentations. Excellent management and supervisory skills. Strong level of influence and negotiation skills. Able to exercise effective judgment, sensitivity, and flexibility in difficult situations.
