Position Overview

This position serves as a Computer Support Specialist requiring enthusiastic customer service skills and strong technical skills. In this role you will image computers, prepare equipment for deployments, and perform computer installations. In addition, you will participate with senior analysts in the configuration, testing, installation, documentation and maintenance of desktop / laptop systems and related peripheral systems and assist higher level staff in conducting training sessions for end users and staff. Essential Functions

  • Under general supervision, serves as a Computer Support Specialist for the Department of Innovation & Technology (DoIT), performing technical work of an intermediate level of difficulty in Client Services and providing technical support and assistance to end users of multiple State of Illinois agencies, boards, and commissions, including participating with senior analysts in the configuration of personal computing devices.
  • Provides intermediate level on-site and remote troubleshooting and support services for agency computer customers and equipment, including providing accurate and quality resolutions to users reported problems with computer hardware, software and related peripherals or services on a statewide basis.
  • Transfers equipment from DoIT warehouse to staging operations area for imaging, validates equipment received against ServiceNow documents, and documents receipt of equipment in designated site logs.
  • Participates with senior analysts in the configuration, testing, installation, documentation, and maintenance of desktop / laptop systems and related peripheral systems to ensure configurations comply with agency security considerations, performance requirements, and established standards.
  • Assists higher level staff in conducting training sessions for end users and staff and evaluates the training sessions.
  • Keeps abreast of new developments in the information technology field by continuing education through online training platforms, meetings, training sessions, seminars, and conferences to increase familiarity with and remain current on products, vendors, techniques, and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of two (2) years of college with coursework in computer science or directly related fields.
  • Requires one (1) year of Client Services or related Information Technology experience.
  • Specialized Skills

  • Requires one (1) year of professional experience providing technical support and troubleshooting for Microsoft Windows or MacOS operating systems in an enterprise or multi-user environment, including diagnosing system issues, applying updates, and ensuring system performance and stability.
  • Requires one (1) year professional experience utilizing Automated Software Development tools such as Microsoft Windows Installer scripts, System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM), or Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (Lite-Touch) to configure, deploy, and maintain software and system images across multiple devices.
  • Requires one (1) year professional experience applying network communication principles, including configuring client network settings, understanding routing protocols, managing Virtual Private Network (VPN) connections, and developing scripts to support system automation and troubleshooting.
  • Requires one (1) year professional experience utilizing Microsoft Office client software products (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) to support business operations, including document creation, data analysis, communication, and collaboration.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • One (1) year of professional experience providing technical support and troubleshooting for Microsoft Windows or MacOS operating systems in an enterprise or multi-user environment, including diagnosing system issues, applying updates, and ensuring system performance and stability.
  • One (1) year professional experience utilizing Automated Software Development tools such as Microsoft Windows Installer scripts, System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM), or Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (Lite-Touch) to configure, deploy, and maintain software and system images across multiple devices.

  • One (1) year of professional experience in inventory management and equipment logistics, including transferring, validating, documenting IT hardware, reconciling deliveries against service records (e.g., ServiceNow), and preparing equipment for imaging and deployment.
  • Ability to analyze data logically and exercise sound judgement in defining and evaluating problems of an operational or procedural nature.
  • Ability to gain and maintain effective working relationships with associates, vendors, clients, and others.
  • Developed verbal and written communication skills to present technical information clearly and precisely to diverse audiences, including business users, development teams, and agency executives.

  • Requires the ability to lift and carry objects or equipment weighing up to 10 pounds. This is considered sedentary work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(a)). Sedentary work involves lifting no more than 10 pounds at a time and requires occasional lifting, carrying, walking, and standing.
