Kansas Wesleyan University (KWU) is an Equal Opportunity Employer that values diversity in employment. We are seeking a Controller to oversee the accounting department, support the CFO, and ensure accurate financial reporting while contributing to the strategic and tactical goals of the university.
Job Summary
The Controller is responsible for managing financial transactions, producing accurate reports, supporting the accounting team, and ensuring compliance with GAAP and university policies. This role reports to the CFO and plays a key part in financial planning and auditing.
Key Responsibilities
Transaction Recording (35%): Oversee accurate and timely recording of all university financial transactions, bank reconciliations, year-end postings, and proper documentation.Financial Reporting & Compliance (15%): Prepare accurate financial statements for internal and external stakeholders. Maintain the accounting system and provide monthly financials and quarterly endowment reports to the CFO.Auditing & Compliance (20%): Support audits by providing accurate records and transaction data. Manage fixed assets and the leased vehicle schedule.Accounts Management (20%): Assist in managing cash reserves, borrowing, payroll reconciliation, student collections, and the Perkins loan program.Other Duties (10%): Assist with trustee board reports, Foundation support, and university committees as assigned.Work Environment
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m., with additional hours (50–60 hrs / wk) during peak times.Physical Conditions: Primarily office work with occasional campus activities.Travel: Minimal, mostly for meetings and development activities.Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s in Accounting required; Master’s preferredExperience: 5+ years in accounting; 2+ years in a supervisory role (private education or non-profit preferred)Skills: Strong communication, proficiency in Word and Excel, team player, task prioritization, confidentiality; CPA preferredPerformance Goals
First 6 months: Successful audit completion, timely financial statements, effective student account management, process improvement recommendations, implementation of new fixed asset software.Salary & Benefits
