Police Apprentice (PT)
The City of Vacaville is recruiting for Police Apprentice (PT). This is an intern-level, part-time, non-safety position within the Police Department. Police Apprentices work part-time and / or on an as-needed basis while pursuing their Associate and / or Bachelor's degree at an accredited college or university. Typical duties include, but are not limited to :
- Perform administrative tasks in support of the Police Department operations
- Complete small, ad hoc projects as assigned
- Take police reports for select crimes, such as bicycle theft, auto theft and burglary
- Mark and coordinate the towing of abandoned vehicles
- Enforce parking regulations by issuing citations
- Perform traffic and pedestrian control as directed
- Participate in crime prevention activities, including neighborhood watch meetings and school or community presentations
- Maintain records and retrieve information
- Attend evening and / or weekend training sessions
- Perform related duties as required
Our Police Apprentice position offers a structured opportunity to gain hands-on experience and specialized training within the Police Department. Apprentices rotate through various units every three to four months, receiving focused instruction aligned with each unit's functions. This rotational experience supports cross-department collaboration and provides exposure to a range of law enforcement career paths.
In addition to the typical duties, the following specialized areas and duties may be assigned including, but not limited to :
Records : Assist with front counter operations, data entry, document transportation, citation sign-offs and vehicle release processing.Evidence : Assist with evidence intake, storage and transportation for external testing, as well as evidence purging and retention tracking. Support evidence call-outs as needed.Traffic : Support vehicle abatement activities, provide traffic control at events and collision scenes, assist with DUI checkpoints and support traffic-related data tracking.Crime-Free Multi-Housing (within the Community Response Unit) : Conduct compliance checks and inspections at crime-free apartment complexes, conduct business checks, complete data entry, prepare statistical reports and assist with basic crime analysis.Administration : Assist various Police Department divisions, including Recruitment, Training, Alarms and Billing, Crime Prevention / Analysis and Community Outreach. Support outreach events, training exercises and recruitment activities, and assist with updating and improving department forms.Cadet Program : Assist with training Volunteer Police Cadets; serve as a liaison for equipment issuance and building access; prepare meeting materials; and support the organization of the annual Solano Cadet Academy and training of Cadet Program leadership.Minimum Qualifications :
Education : High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Current enrollment in an accredited college or university and taking a minimum of 12 units towards an Associate and / or Bachelor's degree with a minimum 2.0 GPA required at the time of hire and continued employment.Experience : Some public contact work experience is required. Community organization experience is desirable. Police Cadet / Explorer experience is preferred.Certification : A California Class C Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment.Other : Must be at least 18 years old by the start of employment. Participation in the part-time Police Apprentice program is limited to a maximum of 4 years. Failure to maintain the educational attendance requirements will result in release from the program.A completed City of Vacaville Employment Application and Supplemental Questionnaire must be received by the Human Resources Department at 650 Merchant Street, Vacaville, CA 95688 before 5 : 30 p.m., Tuesday, February 17, 2026.
