Ophthalmic Technician/Visual Acuity Examiner - Part Time

As an Ophthalmic Technician/Visual Acuity Examiner, you love working with patients. You are the best of the best when it comes to reviewing detailed study manuals and protocols to perform accurate visual acuity assessments. You are very organized, which makes you a perfect fit for working in clinical trials. You are someone who takes initiative and has the flexibility to handle multiple tasks at once. You have experience with Snellen/ETDRS visual acuity and are skilled at manual refraction both at the phoropter and with loose lenses/trial frames. You may have experience with diagnostic testing including OCT, visual field, fundus photography, fluorescein angiography, etc. (but you may not; this is preferred but not required). Because you must obtain certification and maintain ongoing requirements for research trials, you have pronounced attention to detail and are certain to get it right the first time. You are obsessed with learning and as a lifelong seeker of knowledge you read everything! Patient care and excellent bedside manner is a top priority for you. When faced with a challenge, you take a breath, grab your resources, and make a plan! Preparation, agendas, and crushing tasks are your jam. You are an eager self-starter who wants to develop a strong foundation to grow. You have previous experience with ophthalmic assessments (COA/COT preferred) and some previous clinical research experience/exposure is a bonus. This is a part-time role with a flexible schedule ideal for someone who can adjust their availability based on patient appointment needs. This position may also require travel to multiple clinic locations as needed..

What you will own & improve

• Perform manual refractions and visual acuity. You will be responsible for performing refraction and visual acuity assessments on patients for all clinical trials on site (~10-15 trials). This includes refraction at the phoropter and with loose lenses/trial frames.
• Certification. You will be responsible for dissecting procedure manuals in order to gain proper certification. This includes creating and updating cheat sheets and tools to make this process a breeze for yourself and other certified staff. You will own this process for any staff requiring certification on a project by organizing all of this information within a spreadsheet and/or tools that you maintain. Upon study selection, you hit the ground running to ensure we are obtaining certifications ASAP so as not to delay study start up and green light to enroll. You will be tasked with updating appropriate certification and regulatory documents for yourself and certified staff members. You will be responsible for accurate and consistent documentation of these assessments.
• Patient acquisition. You contribute to patient acquisition on a daily basis. This may mean using your ophthalmic knowledge to review clinic schedules and flag potential patients for doctor review, increase study awareness through conversations with clinic staff and physicians, and/or by facilitating lunch-and-learns, and other community outreach activities. You call, prescreen, and schedule screening visits.
• Clinic flow and administrative assistance. Like a clinic ninja, you support the clinical research coordinator with quickly and efficiently moving patients through protocol assessments. You carry out any protocol-related procedures as delegated. This may include traveling to the clinics that we work in throughout the Phoenix valley.

What you already know

• Knowledgeable in Snellen/ETDRS visual acuity & refraction
• How to engage with patients, deliver excellent customer service, and roll out the red carpet!
• You know your way around a computer, printer, scanner the basics. You also consider yourself tech savvy and pick up on new platforms quickly.
• Previous experience in ophthalmology and ophthalmic assessments.

• You will continue to master your skills as a professional research technician and gain experience in multiple indications.

About the Team

This role reports to our Director of Clinical Research or Site Manager.

Local travel is required.
