Project Development Engineer

Position Description

PRIMARY PURPOSE: The successful candidate will be responsible for scoping, preliminary designs and estimating of capital project costs $5mm and up. Estimates will be conceptual to detailed AFE quality.

• Position will work directly with the Commercial, Engineering, and Operations groups to define capital project scopes of work, gather specific project details and design information and assemble into FEED estimate packages.
• Candidates should have sound Engineering capabilities with basic understanding of the project design and execution process.
• Prior estimating experience is expected with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Win Estimator is the preferred estimating software, but experience with any computer-based program will be considered.
• Liquids Terminals/ Facilities type experience is a plus.
• This position is eligible to work a hybrid schedule including work from Office 3-days (Mon-Wed) and work remotely Thursdays and Fridays.
• Typical deliverables are: Perform basic Engineering, layout sketch, process flow diagram (PFD), sketch isometric pipe drawings, equipment list, write up of the Basis of Design, obtain quotations for major components, high level schedule, summary of permitting requirements, definition of civil, electrical and instrumentation requirements.
• Some projects will require in-depth studies of operating parameters and equipment options.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Ability to scope projects based on previous experience and develop conceptual designs and estimates for new projects.
• Read and comprehend PFD's, P&ID's technical drawings and specifications.
• Prepare material take-offs, create detailed estimates and preliminary sketches for proposed capital projects for review with internal customers and management.
• Document the Design Basis for each project.
• Estimates must be well thought out, organized, logical, clear and concise.
• Confirm actual field conditions.
• Oversight and management of 3rd party Engineering assistance.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

EDUCATION:
• Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Mechanical or Chemical Engineering preferred)


EXPERIENCE/SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE:

• A minimum of 5-7 years direct capital estimating experience
• 7-10 years working in the petrochemical industry
• Detailed working knowledge of mechanical and civil construction.
• Familiarity with the following components will be of value: piping/valves and fittings, pipe racks, rail loading racks, truck loading racks, barge dock, ship dock, storage tanks, fire water, jet fuel filtering, horizontal directional drills (HDD), pumps, Motor Control Centers (MCC), variable frequency drives (VFD), SCADA, right of way (ROW), spheres, pig launcher receiver, loading arms, rail design, ethanol blending, vapor combustion unit (VCU), vapor recovery unit (VRU), meter skid, additive injection.
• Experience in Development of Conceptual Design and equipment layouts for Liquid Terminal Facilities.
• Experience in pipe sizing, pump, and valve types.
• Familiar with general Industrial design requirements, experience in planning and executing engineering for projects.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATION:
• Must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license and a driving record satisfactory to the company and its insurers.
• Must complete all Safety training/certification as required by customers to work in their facilities and as required by Kinder Morgan at all locations.
• Must obtain and maintain a Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC).
• The successful candidate will be required to clear a drug screen and a complete background check, after an offer has been extended and prior to being employed.
