Job description

Capital Development Associate

Self-Help started in 1980 with a focus on economic inequality especially in communities that have faced systemic barriers in building wealth. At the core of what Self-Help does is a drive to create and protect ownership and economic opportunity. In other words, we're committed to economic justice! Economic justice means that all communities have the basic infrastructure they need to thrive, from high-quality schools to grocery stores selling fresh food resources that support opportunity at a neighborhood level regardless of demographics, income, or wealth. Since our founding, we've constantly sought to find new ways to pursue greater economic justice: from providing fair and affordable loans to working with partners to demand that lawmakers change unjust policies.

We are seeking a Capital Development Associate to join our team. This person can work hybrid from our offices in Oakland, CA, Chicago, IL or Durham, NC!

The Capital Development Associate is responsible for supporting debt and equity fundraising to further Self-Help's mission-driven programs and impact, including identifying and securing new capital, and fostering relationships with key funding partners and peers. This position will lead and support funder reporting and compliance, ensuring Self-Help meets external deliverables and internal funding goals. Finally, this position will support coordination with Self-Help leadership in various areas, e.g. affordable housing, equitable education, small business and nonprofit lending.

What You'll Do

  • Support development activities to raise needed capital for Self-Help's mission driven initiatives, which may include:
  • New funding opportunities with active and potential funders
  • Proposals and negotiations regarding terms and conditions for debt and equity funding
  • Complex finance closing processes
  • Foster funding and partnership opportunities, which may include:
  • Maintaining relationships with active funders and partner organizations
  • Managing or supporting engagement with external advisory or governing boards
  • Attending industry conferences or meetings as a Self-Help ambassador and to learn from industry best practices
  • Support or lead funding compliance of various debt and equity awards, which may include:
  • Documenting, tracking and initiating scheduled payments on funding held by Self-Help
  • Documenting and tracking commitments to funders
  • Completing and submitting routine financial and impact reporting to funders Gathering and aligning data and information related to in-depth annual reviews and audits
  • Managing internal working groups to coordinate effective and mission aligned usage of debt and equity funding streams
  • Support various Development, Policy & Impact team activities and systems, which may include:
  • Event planning and implementation
  • Grant, deposit, policy and impact working group initiatives
  • Data and information systems, e.g. Salesforce, Sharepoint, Funding Impact and Compliance Dashboard, PowerBI

Perform other duties as may be deemed necessary.

What You'll Need

  • Associates degree in public policy, planning, finance or related field OR equivalent related experience.
  • 2 years' of experience in capital development, legal, lending, real estate development or accounting
  • Ability to effectively plan, organize and prioritize multiple tasks and/or projects to meet deadlines
  • Ability to self-motivate, identify challenges and opportunities and coordinate team responses
  • Strong communication oral and written skills
  • Keen attention to detail and accuracy
  • Experience in community development sector or with tax credit programs preferred.
  • Strong commitment to our mission creating economic opportunity for traditionally underserved communities.
  • Preference for working in organizations that place priority on teamwork and collaboration.
  • Ability and willingness to work beyond normal work hours, as needed.

Ability to demonstrate Self-Help's Core Values:

  • Mission Before Self
  • Service With Excellence
  • Embracing & Promoting Change
  • Results Not Credit
  • Diversity as a Strength
  • Financial Sustainability for Mission Impact
