Job Description

Do you like to tackle complex software challenges?

If you want to dive into hands-on system verification, master automated test strategies, and naturally transition into full-stack engineering over time, you are in the right place! We are looking for an ambitious Junior Software Engineer / Test Engineer who shares our drive to push boundaries, deliver clean code solutions, and guarantee absolute reliability for our nation's warfighters.

In this role, you will play a critical dual role on a high-performing Agile team supporting the modernization of the Global Command and Control System – Joint (GCCS-J). You will kick-start your impact by leading test automation execution, validating frontend visualizations, and verifying system design stability against hard requirements. As you master our architecture, you will be given direct mentorship to build backend microservices with Java/Spring Boot and engineer live geospatial operational overlays. If you are a straightforward, solution-focused professional looking for an intentional, technical path into enterprise full-stack development, let's achieve more together.

Location & Work Environment

  • Primary Location: Newport News, VA
        • Work Style: On-site

Compensation & Benefits

The annual base salary range for this role is $84,000 - $100,000 (USD), which does not include discretionary bonus compensation or our comprehensive benefits package. Actual compensation offered within this pipeline may vary based upon work experience, education, and specific technical skill level.

,

Required Skills

  • Clearance: Active federal Secret security clearance (U.S. Citizenship required).

  • Core Programming Foundations: Hands-on software development experience utilizing Java, JavaScript, or Python to build or verify backend and frontend components.

  • Database Concepts: Practical familiarity utilizing relational databases (SQL) to execute data validations, log defects, and manage baseline query optimization tasks.

  • Version Control: Active experience managing code environments and tracking changes collaboratively using Gitor GitLab.

  • Testing Mindset: Ability to execute manual and automated tests, validate backend REST APIs, verify microservices, and ensure UI components achieve a strict definition of done.

  • Agile Participation: Comfort working inside fast-paced Agile/Scrum sprint ceremonies alongside developers, testers, and product owners to validate acceptance criteria.

Education & Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or a highly related STEM discipline from an accredited college or university.

  • Experience Track: 1–3 years of progressive technical experience across software development, test automation framework execution, or specialized military command and control system environments.

  • Substitution: An equivalent combination of advanced technical certifications, specialized tactical training, or additional years of hands-on software development experience may be considered in lieu of a formal degree.

,

Desired Skills

  • Full-Stack Exposure: Familiarity with modern framework stacks including Spring Boot, Node.js, React, or Angular.

  • Geospatial & Visualization Tools: Exposure to mapping components or geospatial formats (e.g., CesiumJS, KML/KMZ, GeoJSON, or military coordinate systems like MGRS/DMS) to support operational data visualization and mission planning.

  • Cloud-Native Environments: Basic understanding of containerized deployment mechanisms using Docker and Kubernetes.

  • DevSecOps Tooling: Exposure to automated continuous integration pipelines and tools using Jenkins or GitLab CI/CD engines.

  • Domain Familiarity: Knowledge of distributed system validation, strategic command and control systems, or DISA processes.
