A growing MEP engineering firm is seeking an experienced Technical Practice Manager (PE required) to help lead project delivery, technical oversight, and internal operations across a diverse portfolio of building system design projects. This is a senior leadership role with significant responsibility in project management, technical direction, and team coordination. Equity potential is available for the right candidate.

This position will work closely with firm leadership to ensure projects are properly planned, staffed, and executed from kickoff through construction administration while maintaining high technical standards and strong client communication.

Key Responsibilities

Project Startup

  • Attend project kick-off meetings for all projects across the firm
  • Assist with technical project programming and system planning
  • Determine required code-driven systems including sprinkler, fire alarm, smoke purge, and related systems
  • Guide HVAC system selection tailored to project requirements and client needs
  • Coordinate integration of all building systems including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, sprinkler, smoke detection, and fire alarm
  • Coordinate with external consultants and vendors including site/civil engineers, controls, lighting, security, and insurance-related systems
  • Establish preliminary project schedules with architects and owners, including key deliverables and milestones
  • Identify required special inspections (SIs)

Design Phase Oversight

  • Monitor project progress to ensure deliverables remain on schedule
  • Work with project engineers and PMs to identify and manage critical path items
  • Ensure equipment selections and vendor coordination occur early enough to maintain design schedules
  • Communicate schedule risks to management and clients and help establish revised timelines when needed
  • Coordinate major deliverables including DD, DOB, pricing sets, and construction documents

Construction Administration

  • Establish communication protocols for construction teams including shop drawing and submittal distribution
  • Ensure timely processing of submittals and shop drawings
  • Prepare additional service letters when submission limits are exceeded
  • Ensure field reports, site visits, and punch list documentation are completed and issued promptly

Operations & Leadership

  • Maintain and update project status reports for weekly leadership review
  • Assist with proposal development, project budgets, and additional service requests
  • Continue to perform project management, technical design, and construction administration duties on select projects
  • Support firm leadership in managing workflow, staff coordination, and project delivery standards

Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required
  • Extensive experience in MEP consulting engineering
  • Strong background in project management and technical design of building systems
  • Experience coordinating with architects, owners, consultants, and contractors
  • Ability to oversee multiple projects and guide engineering teams
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills

Opportunity

This role offers the opportunity to step into a high-impact leadership position within a growing engineering firm, helping shape project delivery standards and mentor staff. Equity participation may be available for candidates interested in long-term leadership within the organization.
