Purpose:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Classroom teacher:
  • Provides research-based specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives of students who have physical, intellectual, emotional and/or learning disabilities.
  • Teaches to individualized IEP goals using district approved course materials and aligned with the district vision and mission.
  • Develops and uses instructional materials suitable for the instruction of students with wide ranges of mental, physical, and emotional maturation.
  • Coordinates specialized instruction with general education curriculum as appropriate
  • Assesses student progress and determines the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques.
  • Employs various teaching techniques, methods and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals.
  • Establishes research-based positive behavior classroom management programs for students.
  • Develops, monitors and assists students with general hygiene routines.
  • Establishes, monitors, and adjusts behavior management for individual needs.
  • Establishes and maintains a standard of student behavior needed to achieve e?ective participation in all activities.
  • Conducts special education evaluations and reevaluations.
  • Develops and implements annual Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans for students to include: present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the special education and related services
  • required to meet those goals.
  • Schedules team meetings and works cooperatively with child study team members and others in developing instructional goals and strategies.
  • Communicates with parents. Holds parent teacher conferences and IEP team meetings to discuss the individual student's progress.
  • Coordinates the delivery of special education services in each student's IEP.
  • Works e?ectively with multidisciplinary team and other professionals (O.T., P.T., S.L.P.)
  • Creates a positive learning experience with emphasis in individualized instruction using
  • appropriate, district-approved, resources and materials.
  • Trains, supervises, and teaches paraeducators to work with students with special needs.
  • Participate cooperatively with the appropriate administrator in the evaluation process in conformance with the approved district guidelines.
  • Complies with School Board policies and all state/federal rules and regulations.
  • Completes all district and state reporting requirements.

  • administrators.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to perform all duties in accordance with applicable board policies and district and legal requirements.
  • Ability to read and follow manuals.
  • Ability to meet and maintain punctuality and attendance expectations.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, eaching, handling, touching and/or feeling.
  • Manuel dexterity to operate a telephone and enter data into a computer.
  • Able to sit at a desk, conference table, and/or in meetings of various configurations for extended periods of time.
  • Able to see and read, with or without visual aids, laws and codes, rules,
  • policies, and other printed matter, computer screens and printouts.
  • Able to hear and understand speech on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal conversations.
SKILLS
  • Able to perform single, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.
  • Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: controlling and motivating students, maintaining accurate records, using pertinent software applications, adhering to safety practices, operating standard office equipment
KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Current teaching methods and techniques, especially for students with severe disabilities.
  • Learning theories, assessment practices, and current research regarding students with disabilities.
  • Policies and procedures pertaining to IEPs.
  • Behavior intervention theories and techniques.
  • Core, and alternative, curriculum and strategies for implementing curriculum
  • Current laws and regulations pertaining to students with disabilities.
  • First Aid and CPR.
  • Research methods and report writing techniques.
  • Issues related to adult transition.
ABILITY TO:
  • Utilize interpersonal skills including tact, patience, and courtesy to establish and maintain professional relationships with students, parents, and school/district sta?.
  • Establish e?ective rapport with students.
  • Communicate e?ectively, both orally and in writing, ideas, thoughts, lesson material and instructions to students, parents, sta?, and community.
  • Plan, organize, and implement IEPs.
  • Organize instruction based on individual and group needs.
  • Direct the work of instructional assistants and volunteers.
  • Collaborate e?ectively with a wide variety of professional sta?.
  • Monitor students' physical, emotional, and educational needs during school hours.
  • Maintain suitable learning environment including appropriate planning and organization of classroom and materials.
  • Manage and prioritize multiple activities with accuracy and in a timely fashion.
  • Operate a computer and standard o?ce equipment.

Experience: Prior special education experience is preferred.

Education: Bachelor's degree

Certificated & License Requirements:

WA State T eaching Certificate with K-12 Special Education Endorsement or ability to obtain endorsement

Valid First Aid Certificate
