Responsibilities
The adjunct professor will teach the following courses in Fall 2026:
BIOL 152L (4 credits)
BIOL 151L (4 credits)
Biology of Organism laboratory (BIOL 152L)
This lab course is intended for biology majors and students in related STEM programs. It provides an introduction to the structure and function of the organism as a whole. The course is organized around central problems that all organisms, both plants and animals, must solve. Problems to be examined include feeding strategies, gas exchange, water balance, waste disposal, circulation, thermoregulation, dealing with gravity, and locomotion. The laboratory will introduce students to experimental design. Two laboratory sections.
Cell and Molecular Biology laboratory (BIOL 151L)
This lab course is intended for biology majors and students in related STEM programs. It provides an introduction to the structure and function of cells. Emphasis will be on how molecules are organized within cells to allow for energy production, synthesis of new materials, communication with other cells, replication of genetic information, and reproduction. The laboratory will introduce many ways of studying cells and molecules, including various forms of microscopy and basic recombinant DNA techniques. Two laboratory sections.
Position Qualifications and Requirements
Whittier College is seeking a broadly trained Biologist with a preferred expertise in Marine Biology, Biology of Organisms, and/or Cellular Molecular Biology. Successful candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate education and a dedication to innovative and effective teaching that prepares a diverse student body for future success. Preference will be given to candidates who have completed a Ph.D. or Masters, we will also consider candidates who have achieved ABD status within the biological sciences in any one of the fields mentioned above. Teaching load includes two lower division laboratory sections, one nonmajors general biology course and one upper division course with lab. Courses described below.
