Through its robust suite of tools, Realtor.com® not only makes a significant impact on the real estate industry at large, but for consumers, navigating the biggest purchase they will make in their life, by providing a user experience that is easy to use, easy to understand, and most of all, easy to make decisions.

Join us on our mission to empower more people to find their way home by breaking barriers to entry, making the right connections, and building confidence through expert guidance.

Sr. Android Engineer, Design Systems

Are you passionate about Design Systems, solving complex UI problems, and creating scalable architectures? You'll be right at home here. The technology team participates in the research and development of highly scalable, data-driven, consumer-facing applications and identifies new technologies and trends to continually enhance our products and business. Work and learn from world-class talent that promotes a culture of experimentation and learning.

The Component Systems team is looking for a Senior Software Engineer who specializes in UI Component Systems and Android app development. You will help shape the user experience for Realtor.com®'s consumer-facing Mobile applications, which see millions of unique visitors daily. You will contribute to the design and architectural decisions for our internal component library and its supporting ecosystem of tools and processes. As a part of this team, you will play a key role in developing a critical component enabling our engineering community across all of our consumer product lines to build scalable applications.

We believe in leveraging the best tools to solve problems faster. You will be expected to utilize AI coding assistants and LLMs proficiently to accelerate development velocity, generate boilerplate, and troubleshoot complex debugging scenarios. Beyond simple usage, this role requires the critical judgment to verify AI-generated outputs for security, performance, and accuracy. You should be comfortable integrating AI tooling into your daily workflow to eliminate repetitive tasks, allowing you to focus on high-impact architectural and strategic engineering challenges.

What You'll Do:

  • Work in the Component Systems team to develop and optimize our internal component library used by the design and engineering community across our consumer product teams
  • Create modular, performant, responsive, highly scalable, and accessible (WCAG 2.1) Kotlin components in collaboration with our Design System and Product teams that adhere to our best practices
  • Ensure that components are fully tested using automated frameworks, including unit, component, and end-to-end (e2e) tests
  • Optimize developer experience by developing intuitive component APIs, authoring thorough documentation, and providing migration guides for our engineering community
  • Provide engineering and design teams with technical guidance and support for component usage, code reviews, feature requests, bug fixes, UI and accessibility best practices through office hours and ad hoc requests
  • Contribute to an ecosystem of tools, documentation, and processes that support our Component System users and minimize development friction
  • Participate in discussions on component systems and library architecture with engineers to build high-quality components with intuitive APIs that are easy to implement
  • Build relationships with designers and engineers across different product lines and bridge gaps between product design and engineering
  • Research and identify opportunities for improvements to our existing processes and solutions, and create proof of concepts
  • Collaborate with the team lead and leadership to contribute to short/long-term goals and roadmaps
  • Engage in Agile ceremonies like standups, office hours, weekly planning, and retrospectives and work in a development process that is primarily Kanban

What You'll Bring:

  • 5+ years of development experience with up-to-date knowledge of Kotlin, Java and the Android SDK
  • Passionate about Design Systems and solving complex UI problems, and have a great sense for identifying design/interface patterns
  • Attention to detail, great sense of design, and commitment to beautiful user experiences
  • Strong experience working with Rx, Dagger, MVVM, and Android architecture components (ie. Jetpack)
  • Experience with component library architecture and best practices around responsive layouts, accessibility, and animation
  • Experience working in the Atomic Design methodology and breaking down complex UI designs into modular pieces that can be intuitively assembled with each other
  • Experience with component systems toolings such as Storybook, Figma, and Zeroheight
  • Ability to troubleshoot and debug mobile application problems such as UI rendering performance, layout issues, APK/App Bundle size optimization, memory leaks, battery consumption monitoring and optimization, accessibility problems, device fragmentation bugs, etc.
  • Familiarity with manual accessibility testing using assistive technologies
  • Experience working within an engineering platform or enablement team
  • Experience working with a Design Systems team
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts and trade-offs to both engineering and business audiences
  • Strong communication skills with a growth and learning mindset
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science/Engineering/related field or equivalent professional experience
