Post Primary Clinical Apprentice - Computed Tomography (CT)

Location: Duke University Hospital

2301 Erwin Rd, Durham, NC 27705

Work Schedule: Flexible hours, multiple shifts available

Duke University Health System is seeking an experienced or new graduate Imaging Technologist to join one of the most comprehensive and advanced CT programs in the region while embracing our mission of Advancing Health Together.

At Duke University Hospital, you'll have the opportunity to work alongside a collaborative team of more than 60 full-time CT Technologists supporting a wide range of specialized services, including Trauma, Emergency Medicine, Pediatrics, Cardiac, Oncology, Transplant, Interventional Radiology, Surgical Services, and Urgent Outpatient Care.

Our CT department operates 20 state-of-the-art scanners across the health system, including 14 fixed clinical scanners, 5 intraoperative scanners, and 1 portable scanner dedicated to the Neuro ICU. Whether you are an experienced technologist looking to expand your expertise or a new graduate eager to build a strong foundation, you'll find exceptional learning opportunities, supportive mentorship, and a team committed to delivering world-class patient care.

What you will do:

  • Train in and perform CT examinations under the direct supervision of a licensed CT technologist.
  • Progressively demonstrate required clinical competencies, protocols, and workflows necessary to qualify to sit for the ARRT CT registry.
  • Perform imaging tasks only within approved scope and competency level until independent competencies are achieved.
  • Participate in end‑to‑end CT workflow, including patient preparation, exam sequencing, scanner readiness, and post‑exam processes.
  • Support efficient use of CT resources while learning prioritization of inpatient, outpatient, emergency, and procedural imaging.
  • Assist with patient transport, room turnover, contrast and supply preparation, and coordination activities that support exam cycle time and access goals.
  • Apply workflow efficiencies learned during training to support consistent throughput under supervision.
  • Provide professional, compassionate patient interactions, including explanation of exam steps, reassurance, and support throughout the imaging encounter.
  • Collaborate with staff to ensure patient comfort, safety, and clear communication.
  • Assist with stocking, equipment readiness checks (non‑clinical), and maintaining organized, clean exam areas between patients.
  • Work collaboratively with CT technologists, nursing, front‑desk staff, and transport teams to support coordinated patient care.
  • Adhere to radiation safety, infection prevention, HIPAA, and departmental policies.
  • Actively engage in feedback, evaluations, and competency documentation required for progression toward independent practice.

**DUHS offers career growth and enrichment within imaging services. There is a clinical ladder program with various steps and opportunities at each hospital within the health system.
