At Husch Blackwell we believe that diverse, equitable and inclusive teams lead to better outcomes. Husch Blackwell is committed to retaining, recruiting, developing, and promoting talented lawyers and business professionals with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We foster an engaged, diverse, and inclusive team culture of accountability and purpose that makes our Firm and our communities better.

Our firm is committed to attracting and retaining professionals who value each other and the service we provide by embracing Teamwork, Collaboration, Client Service, and Innovation. If you are a motivated professional looking for a long-term fit where you can grow in a role, and will be valued and empowered, then we invite you to apply to our Business Development Manager position, supporting our Complex Torts (CXT) industry group. This position may be filled in any city with a Husch Blackwell office.

The Business Development Manager (“BDM”) plays a critical role in developing and managing the business development and marketing strategy for assigned practices and industry groups. These strategies will be focused on driving new business from both existing clients and prospects as well as raising the profile of the firm as a whole. This role is expected to work proactively with attorneys and business professionals across the firm as well as all members of the Business Development, Marketing and Communications Department to foster a culture of business development and marketing collaboration across office, practice and industry group lines.

This role will support our newly formed Complex Torts (CXT) business unit, which was created to capture market share of the multi-billion-dollar opportunity this type of work represents. CXT is a unified platform focused on providing the infrastructure and support to scale large portfolios and deliver client value in a strategic and innovative manner. The group has ambitious goals to accelerate growth and competitive advantage, and the BDM will work alongside highly motivated partners and business professionals to deliver best-in-class legal excellence, powered by technology, data, and integrated solution design.

This role will also be responsible for managing and developing a junior team member to ensure consistency in work product and provide guidance, feedback, and opportunities under the supervision of the Director of Business Development. Essential functions include:

  • Analyze and monitor market and client research to identify opportunities from emerging trends, challenges, and legal needs within the marketplace.
  • Collaborate with leadership and key partners to identify expansion opportunities and develop cross-selling initiatives by matching firm solutions to client needs.
  • Develop marketing and business development initiatives and projects for CXT by leveraging the firmwide strategic plan, tracking OKRs and ROI on initiatives, priorities and goals.
  • Develop and maintain a robust understanding of group’s key clients, acting as a trusted advisor to group leads and lawyers.
  • Position and draft appropriate content in collateral and marketing materials, including matter and group descriptions that are appropriate for use in pitches, client-facing work product and on firm website as appropriate.
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of the experience within CXT to identify potential synergies for existing clients as well as new prospects. Oversee the maintenance of experience records within Foundation for use in proposals and other client-facing work product.
  • Track and report on business development metrics, client engagement activities, and revenue performance against plan, providing insights and recommendations for improvement.
  • Alongside the Proposal team, compile tailored proposals to win new clients and expand work with existing clients.
  • In collaboration across the department, ensure that thought leadership is leveraged across distribution channels including internal communications and social media.
  • Together with the Events team, oversee educational, networking, and client events in alignment with assigned group business plans and go-to-market strategy. Drive post-event ROI.
  • Serve as an advisor and lead initiative qualifying conversations with lawyers to ensure initiatives support the firm's strategic plans and objectives.
  • Contribute to special projects and strategic initiatives as directed by various leadership stakeholders.
  • Act as a connector across internal teams and client stakeholders to ensure seamless delivery of the Firm's capabilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • 4-year degree with major coursework in marketing, communications, or related field; or combination of education and commensurate work experience required.
  • 7+ years of solid marketing and business development experience at progressing levels throughout career. Experience in a professional services firm or related organization preferred.
