Job Description:

POSITION OVERVIEW

  • We are seeking a Level 9 Custom Software Engineer specializing in Mainframe and COBOL engineering to support critical core systems transformation within Financial Services (FS). In this role, you will design, code, and enhance legacy and custom software components across high-throughput enterprise banking systems. You will utilize modern mainframe architectural patterns and Agile practices to deliver scalable, reliable solutions tailored to high-volume transaction processing environments.

DAY-TO-DAY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, code, test, and maintain high-performing COBOL applications and batch/online processing components on IBM Mainframe platforms.
  • Apply mainframe architectural patterns to optimize transaction processing speeds, resource consumption, and system reliability across banking modules.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams and enterprise stakeholders to align technical implementations with business objectives.
  • Support problem-solving across multiple development teams, serving as a technical subject matter expert for complex COBOL/Mainframe issues.
  • Take ownership of specific delivery workstreams, conducting thorough code reviews and enforcing software engineering best practices.
  • Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers, contributing to team decision-making and driving continuous improvements in development workflows.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • COBOL Development (5+ years) Advanced hands-on experience in writing, debugging, and optimizing complex COBOL code for enterprise banking platforms.
  • Mainframe Systems (5+ years) Deep expertise in z/OS environments, JCL, CICS, DB2/VSAM data management, and batch execution management.
  • Mainframe Architecture Patterns (5+ years) Demonstrated skill in designing scalable, fault-tolerant mainframe solution architectures and interface contracts.
  • Banking/Financial Services Industry Domain (3+ years) Strong understanding of core banking operational workflows, transaction flows, and regulatory considerations.

ADDITIONAL DESIRED SKILLS

  • Client Communication & Stakeholder Engagement Ability to articulate complex mainframe architecture concepts to non-technical business partners.
  • Agile Delivery Methodologies Active participation in backlog refinement, sprint execution, and collaborative team ceremonies (Scrum/Kanban).
  • Cross-functional Collaboration Demonstrated success working effectively across distributed engineering teams.
