Job Title: State Tax Account Closure Specialist
Job Description
This role focuses on supporting the closure of state tax accounts for previously dissolved or consolidated legal entities. You will identify accounts that should be closed, communicate directly with state taxing authorities, submit closure requests, and track progress through resolution. This position is ideal for someone with early-career experience in accounting, tax, or compliance who enjoys detailed, process-driven work and contributing to a collaborative team.
Responsibilities
- Assist with closing state tax accounts related to previously dissolved or consolidated legal entities.
- Identify active state tax accounts that should have been closed and verify their status.
- Communicate with state taxing authorities via email, online portals, and written correspondence to request account closures.
- Submit closure requests through state online portals or by formal letters, depending on state requirements.
- Track the status of account closures and follow up with state agencies as needed to ensure timely resolution.
- Help ensure that all accounts intended for closure in the prior year are fully resolved and documented.
- Maintain clear and accurate tracking documentation and logs using Excel to monitor account closure activities.
- Escalate unresolved issues, complex situations, or tax notices to sr team members when appropriate.
- Collaborate with team members to share updates, resolve issues, and maintain consistent closure processes.
- Support general compliance and clean-up efforts related to state tax accounts as needed.
Essential Skills
- 1–3 years of experience in accounting, tax, or compliance support roles.
- Some exposure to state tax filings, tax notices, or compliance work.
- Comfort communicating with government agencies via email, online portals, and formal letters.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage repetitive, process-driven tasks accurately.
- Basic Excel skills, including creating and maintaining simple tracking spreadsheets.
- Ability to organize and track multiple account closure requests simultaneously.
- Willingness to work fully onsite, 5 days per week.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience responding to state tax notices.
- Familiarity with state revenue department portals.
- Prior experience assisting with account closures, entity changes, or compliance clean-up work.
- Interest in developing deeper knowledge of state tax compliance processes.
- Comfort working in a collaborative environment where initiative and new ideas are encouraged.
Work Environment
This is a fully onsite role, with employees working in the office 5 days per week. The team offers a collaborative culture where colleagues actively support one another, and leadership values open communication and encourages new ideas. Employees’ voices are heard, and taking initiative is welcomed. The position offers a flexible morning start time between 8:00–9:00 AM. Work is primarily computer-based, using Excel, email, and state tax portals in a structured, detail-oriented environment.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract position based out of Miramar, FL.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $28.00/hr.
