At EVO we promote diversity and equality of opportunity in all EVO Power's work and practices and are building a staff culture where everyone is valued and supported to be their best. Our business specializes in cutting-edge design and commercialization of integrated lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and software solutions tailored to the Commercial, Industrial and Small Utility renewable energy markets. These solutions are especially focused on the rapid adoption of renewable energy resources and electric vehicle charging solutions. EVO Power is going through a period of strong and sustained growth in Australia and has recently expanded its business into the US and South Korea. As part of our long-term strategy to continue this unprecedent growth, an opportunity exists for a Control Systems Engineer. This position is designed for early-career engineers with a solid foundation in software coding and development, who are looking to apply these skills within control systems in the energy storage industry. The successful candidate will work closely with senior engineers and receive direct mentorship and technical guidance, particularly in software and control systems development. This role offers strong learning and growth opportunities within a fast-scaling, high-impact industry. Key Responsibilities: Design and Development * Support the design and development of control systems tailored for battery energy storage system (BESS) applications. * Assist in creating and implementing embedded software for seamless integration within electronic systems and control frameworks. PLC Programming * Assist in developing, programming, and debugging PLC code using industry-standard languages such as ladder logic, function block diagrams, and structured text. * Support customization and configuration of PLC hardware and software to meet specific project requirements. * Assist in implementing and troubleshooting control strategies for various automated systems. * Demonstrated knowledge of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) principles. * Exposure to CODESYS or similar IEC 61131-3 compliant development platforms. HMI (Human-Machine Interface) Development * Support in designing user-friendly HMI interfaces for monitoring and controlling industrial processes. * Assist in integrating HMI systems with PLCs to provide real-time data visualization and operator interaction. System Integration * Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including electrical and mechanical engineers, to integrate PLC systems for seamless BESS operations. * Ensure seamless communication between PLCs and other control devices, such as sensors, actuators, and SCADA systems. Testing and Debugging * Conduct thorough testing of PLC programs to identify and resolve errors and anomalies. * Troubleshoot issues related to hardware, software, and communication protocols to ensure system reliability. Documentation * Maintain detailed documentation of PLC programs, configurations, and system modifications. * Support creation of technical manuals and user guides for operators and maintenance personnel. Upgrades and Maintenance * Stay updated with advancements in PLC technology and recommend hardware or software upgrades when necessary. * Perform routine maintenance and updates to PLC systems to ensure optimal performance and compliance with industry standards. Safety and Compliance * Adhere to safety protocols and industry regulations when designing and implementing PLC systems. * Ensure systems meet relevant safety standards and conduct risk assessments as needed. Training and Support * Provide training and support to operators, maintenance teams, and other stakeholders on the proper use and maintenance of PLC systems. Continuous Improvement * Contribute to continuous improvement by staying at the forefront of technological advancements in electronics and automation. * Oversee the execution of complex engineering projects, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to quality standards. Performance and Outcomes * Ensure measurable improvements in system efficiency through optimized control strategies and proactive maintenance. * Reduce downtime and enhance system reliability through rigorous testing protocols and troubleshooting. ABOUT YOU Qualifications & Experience Required * Bachelor's degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. * Skills in embedded software development and troubleshooting. * Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for testing, debugging, and optimizing electronic systems. * Familiarity with safety protocols and industry standards, such as IEC 61508 or equivalent. * Excellent documentation and communication skills. * Ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines and contribute to cross-functional teams. Desired * Proven experience in PLC programming, HMI design, and system integration. * Experience in the utility, renewable energy, BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems), or microgrid sectors. * Experience with energy management systems, IoT platforms, SCADA, or power systems software. * Exposure to regulatory frameworks and compliance relevant to energy markets (e.g., NEM, grid interconnection requirements). * Familiarity with business case development, product commercialization, and roadmap ownership. * MBA or further qualifications in product leadership, energy systems, or business management. Desired * Knowledge of control systems, DER integration, or energy data protocols (e.g., Modbus, OPC-UA, IEEE standards). * Understanding of cybersecurity principles applicable to operational and energy systems. * Working knowledge of microservices architecture and scalability considerations. * Ability to interpret UX/UI best practices and collaborate with design teams. * Basic technical familiarity with APIs, SQL, Python, or energy simulation tools (not required for coding responsibilities). Culture * To promote diversity and equality of opportunity in all EVO Power's work and practices. * To assist in building a staff culture where everyone is valued and equipped to do their job. * We are an equal opportunity employer and are committed to fostering an inclusive workplace.
