Data Architect

QB EnergyDenver, CO, US
[job_card.30_days_ago]

  • [job_card.full_time]
[job_card.job_description]

Company Information

QB Energy is a Denver-based upstream natural gas company committed to delivering value through responsible acquisition, development, and production that benefits both shareholders and stakeholders by operating efficiently, sustainably, and with cutting-edge technology.

QB Energy operates in the Piceance Basin of Western Colorado, currently operating about 400,000 net acres. The company develops and operates upstream gathering, compression, processing, and fractionation assets, with a focus on safety, environmental stewardship, and community engagement. Initiatives such as zero-flaring, methane emissions reduction, water recycling, and wildlife mitigation help minimize footprint while maximizing long-term value.

Job Summary

This is a ground-floor opportunity to join a small, high-performing team building modern data infrastructure at an oil and gas company. You will work directly with the CTO on a digital transformation effort, building new systems from the ground up using tools like Python, Prefect, Power BI, Spotfire, React and AI-assisted development.

The Data Engineer Architect will support data operations across QB Energy, handling both day-to-day data tasks and contributing to larger engineering projects. Responsibilities will include database queries, reporting, spreadsheet automation, vendor coordination, and full stack application development—including React-based data capture and reporting tools. This is a fast-paced, lean environment where you will be expected to learn quickly, take ownership with minimal oversight, and actively build solutions from day one.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Day-to-Day Data Operations:

  • Write and maintain SQL and ETLs for reporting and data extraction mostly in Python, and also in C#, Go and Rust.
  • Write and maintain React applications and dashboards with FastAPI backends.
  • Build and maintain Excel data connections, reports, and dashboards for business users
  • Create and maintain Power BI and Spotfire reports and dashboards
  • Handle vendor coordination—managing system logins, access requests, REST API integrations, and basic administration
  • Support data quality efforts—identifying issues, cleaning data, and documenting processes
  • Respond to ad-hoc data requests from across the organization

Growth & Engineering Work:

· Learn and contribute to our modern data stack: PostgreSQL, Prefect, MinIO, Python, and streaming data platform.

  • Build full stack applications including React-based field data capture and reporting tools for operations teams
  • Design and build full-featured web applications and dashboards for internal users
  • Assist with ETL pipeline development and data integration projects
  • Use AI tools (Claude, Claude Code) to accelerate development—with appropriate guardrails
  • Document systems, processes, and technical decisions

Why This Role:

· Many roles at established companies involve narrow tasks and slow career progression. This role is different. You’ll work directly with senior technical leadership, get exposure to the full data stack, and have real ownership from day one. Yes, you’ll do some spreadsheet work. But you’ll also be building applications, learning modern data engineering tools, and contributing to a digital transformation that’s replacing legacy systems.

· If you’re someone who takes initiative, moves fast, and wants to have a real impact on a growing company—this is a role where you can make your mark.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

Our team uses AI-assisted development extensively. We use Claude Code to build applications, write queries, and accelerate routine work. But we don't blindly trust AI output—we review code critically, run tests manually, and maintain control over what touches production systems.

To be effective here, you need to understand what the AI is building well enough to catch mistakes, ask better follow-up questions, and know when to stop and think before executing. This means having real foundational knowledge—not just the ability to copy and paste prompts.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, or related field
  • Bootcamp graduates, self-taught developers, and career changers will be considered if you can demonstrate real skills through your work samples

Required Experience:

  • 2–5 years of experience in a data, analytics, or technical role—OR demonstrable personal/side projects
  • Solid SQL and ETL skills—you can write queries, joins, and aggregations without instruction
  • Proficiency with Excel including data connections, pivot tables, and formulas
  • Basic Python knowledge—enough to read, modify, and debug scripts
  • Ability to work independently and figure things out without constant direction
  • Work sample required: You must be able to show us something you built—an application, a data project, an automation, something that demonstrates you can take an idea and make it real

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with Power BI, Spotfire, or similar business intelligence tools
  • Experience with any modern data tools (dbt, Airflow, Prefect, Snowflake, BigQuery, etc.)
  • Familiarity with GIS tools or spatial data (PostGIS, QGIS, ArcGIS)
  • Familiarity with web development (HTML, JavaScript, React)
  • Experience using AI coding assistants (Claude, Copilot, Cursor) productively
  • Oil and gas industry experience (helpful but not required)

What We're Really Looking For:

  • Curiosity—you want to understand how things work, not just get them to work
  • Ownership—you see a problem and fix it without waiting to be asked
  • Humility—you're willing to do grunt work when it needs doing
  • Critical thinking—you question outputs (especially from AI) and verify before trusting

The base compensation for this role in this location is targeted between $102,000 and $132,000 annually. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors, including candidate experience and expertise, and may vary from the range listed above.
