Job description

Finance Analyst III

As a Finance Analyst III on the Niche Diagnostics (NDx) Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) team, you will partner with leaders across R&D, Sales, Marketing, Quality, Facilities, and General & Administrative (G&A) functions to help them understand financial performance and make informed business decisions.

You will support monthly financial reporting and close activities, analyze actual results against budgets and forecasts, help develop annual budgets and longer-term financial plans, and provide financial analysis for business decisions and investments.

This role is well suited for a finance or accounting professional who enjoys working with data, explaining financial results to business partners, and finding ways to improve and automate financial processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a finance partner to R&D, Sales, Marketing, Quality, Facilities, and G&A teams, helping business leaders understand financial performance and make informed decisions.
  • Manage and forecast operating expenses (OPEX), including reviewing actual spending against budget and forecast and explaining key variances.
  • Support R&D project financial reviews by tracking project spending, forecasts, and financial performance.
  • Partner with HR and commercial teams on headcount and resource planning, including forecasting the financial impact of hiring and staffing decisions.
  • Support capital expenditure (CAPEX) planning by developing financial business cases, reviewing completed investments against expectations, and monitoring fixed assets.
  • Support and coordinate monthly financial close activities, including variance analysis, accruals, reclassifications, account reconciliations, and management reporting to help ensure accurate P&L and balance sheet results.
  • Prepare and analyze annual budgets, monthly forecasts, and long-range financial plans, with a primary focus on operating expenses.
  • Provide financial analysis and decision support to business unit leadership, functional leaders, Division Finance, and Accounting.
  • Analyze business unit profitability, spending trends, and working capital and identify opportunities to improve financial performance.
  • Prepare clear financial reports and presentations that summarize results, key drivers, risks, and opportunities for finance and business leadership.
  • Reconcile financial information across systems and help maintain accurate, consistent financial data.
  • Identify opportunities to simplify, standardize, and automate financial reporting and analytical processes.
  • Support strong financial controls and compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) requirements, corporate policies, and applicable statutory requirements.
  • Participate in Practical Process Improvement (PPI) initiatives to improve finance processes and controls.
  • Support additional finance projects and business needs as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of progressive experience in financial analysis, accounting, FP&A, or a related finance role.
  • Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including the ability to organize, analyze, and summarize financial data.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to communicate financial information clearly to both finance and non-finance colleagues.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across different functions and geographic locations.
  • Demonstrated initiative and willingness to identify and improve inefficient processes.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with financial planning, reporting, ERP, or consolidation systems such as SAP, Oracle, Hyperion/Essbase, or similar platforms.
  • Experience with data visualization or business intelligence tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or similar tools.
  • Familiarity with databases, SQL, or other tools used to organize and analyze large data sets.
  • Experience with Microsoft automation tools or other workflow/process automation technologies.
  • Experience using AI tools appropriately to improve financial analysis, reporting, or process efficiency.
  • Experience supporting budgeting, forecasting, month-end close, or financial business partnering.
  • Familiarity with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) controls or working in a regulated business environment.
  • Experience with continuous improvement methodologies, including Practical Process Improvement (PPI), is a plus.

What Will Help You Succeed:

  • Curiosity and a willingness to learn the business behind the numbers.
  • Ability to translate financial data into clear insights and recommendations.
  • Comfort asking questions and working with business partners to understand financial results.
  • A continuous improvement mindset and interest in making financial processes simpler and more efficient.
  • Leadership and initiative consistent with Thermo Fisher Scientific's 4-I Values: Integrity, Intensity, Innovation, and Involvement.
