Portfolio Analyst

The Portfolio Analyst supports portfolio decision-making by conducting SKU-level performance analysis, maintaining data accuracy, and delivering structured reporting across the product portfolio. This role plays a key part in portfolio governance by preparing data, coordinating cross-functional inputs, and supporting monthly portfolio review processes. The analyst owns data accuracy and reporting consistency, ensuring reliable insights in a fast-paced, evolving environment. This position reports to the Director of Marketing HQ.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Analyze SKU-level performance (sales, margin, velocity) across a broad food portfolio to identify risks such as slow-moving inventory and margin erosion.
  • Execute structured analyses (e.g., ABC analysis, scorecards) to support SKU evaluation and portfolio rationalization (Grow, Maintain, Exit).
  • Maintain portfolio master data (SKU mapping, category tagging) to ensure consistency across systems, channels, and temperature states.
  • Build and manage dashboards and recurring reports to support category performance tracking and business decision-making.
  • Prepare and deliver monthly portfolio review materials for cross-functional alignment.
  • Evaluate product mix to identify concentration risks (e.g., supplier or category dependency) and portfolio inefficiencies.
  • Monitor the external market and competitive landscape to identify portfolio gaps and optimization opportunities.
  • Support portfolio governance by preparing data and materials for cross-functional reviews, ensuring visibility on product lifecycle status.
  • Coordinate with Product, Finance, Sales, and Supply Chain to align on inventory, procurement, and portfolio priorities.

Experience/ Training/ Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Business Analytics, or Economics
  • 3 years of experience in the industry, specifically with food manufacturers or distributors. Understanding "velocity" (how quickly a product moves off the shelf) and "margin erosion" is critical in this field.
  • Experience performing "ABC Analysis" to categorize products by their contribution to revenue and volume.
  • A proven track record of working between Purchasing, Sales, and Warehouse Operations to coordinate product exits or new launches.

Knowledge, Skills, and Ability

  • Advanced Excel Proficiency: Mastery of VLOOKUP, pivot tables, and complex formulas for high-volume data manipulation.
  • Business Intelligence (BI): Experience utilizing Power BI or Tableau to visualize trends and performance.
  • Financial Literacy: A solid understanding of core metrics, including Sales, Margin, and COGS.
  • Data Querying: Familiarity with SQL or similar database tools is a plus.
  • Reporting Excellence: Proven ability to manage recurring reporting cycles with consistent reliability and speed.
  • Core Competencies
  • Analytical Rigor: High level of accuracy and attention to detail when managing large, SKU-level datasets.
  • Data Translation: Ability to synthesize complex data into clear, actionable insights for stakeholders.
  • Strategic Alignment: Ability to connect individual SKU performance to broader portfolio health and impact.
  • Analytical Reasoning: Strategic thinking with the ability to translate business goals into actionable project plans. The capacity to break down complex problems into manageable components and identify trends within "noisy" data.
  • Commercial Awareness: Deep understanding of the product lifecycle, margin leakage, and cost allocation drivers.
  • Agility & Initiative: A continuous improvement mindset with the ability to navigate fast-paced environments, even when faced with incomplete data.
  • Adaptability: The ability to pivot forecasts quickly when market conditions or company priorities shift overnight.
  • Ethical Integrity: As analysts handle sensitive and confidential data, they must maintain the highest standards of honesty and objectivity.

Working conditions:

The Portfolio Analyst typically operates in a comfortable, controlled office environment. While full-time employees generally work a standard 40-hour week, modified schedules or overtime may be necessary during peak business periods. Due to the requirement for global portfolio-related support, the Portfolio Analyst may be required to maintain an irregular on-call schedule, which includes early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Physically, the role is primarily sedentary and requires the ability to sit and concentrate for extended periods, though prolonged work at computer monitors may result in eyestrain. Mentally, the position demands a high cognitive load and the ability to manage sustained pressure from short deadlines, requiring unwavering focus on accuracy and productivity.

The Portfolio Analyst will be responsible for conducting site visits to local markets and food service businesses to collect essential data on market conditions, which informs SKU performance analysis and optimization opportunities. Travel may be required to attend key sponsored events, such as industry food shows in New York, Florida, and San Francisco, to gain a comprehensive understanding of regional market trends.
